honey they piss me off too. I work for the commission for the deaf and hard of hearing in Mass, and some of the hearing callers are just rude. I cannot curs them out, but I want to when I hear stuff like, I dont want to go to a deaf person I want a real person. THAT is just wrong. Deaf people are people too!!! The only difference is that they cannot hear. It just sucks.

But I can identify... being black, I experience some of the same struggles, some people dont want to be my friend just because I'm black. I didnt ask to be black, you didnt ask to be deaf we just are. But that type of person doesnt deserve to be your friend.

I wish you lived near me. I want so badly to have a really good deaf friend so I can learn more about deaf culture, and practice sign language. Where are you from? I have some friends at work who are deaf, but we dont really hang together outside of work.

I worked in a Blind Centre for a while where there were some deaf people... i thought that they were very nice. There's nothing wrong with being deaf just because u are a bit different from us... u have a weakness in ur hearing where we might have a weakness in other things...u may be and difintely are really good at some things that we aren't. See it all balances out. We seem to take for granted many things including our hearing and sight until it's taken away from us. I'm sorry u've been treated badly by certain ignorant people..but u never know one day they may experience what u have...maybe not in the hearing department but something else. At the end of the day u shouldn't let these people get to u...u are a human like us after all...and probably better than many people. All that matters is what's inside u.

,.Deaf people can be really sweet I think that hearing people hear all the nasty comments that people make more often anyway then deaf people and tend to have had to become a little harder to cope with the world, where as deaf people can be a bit oblivious apart from that I don't think there is any difference between deaf and hearing people. I had a really crush on a deaf woman when I was younger because she was kind of sweet natured and a little naive I kind of liked it. The only negative thing I would say is that some people who have been hard of hearing from birth I find it hard to understand and in some cased these people have got frustrated or angry with me but really I could not understand what they were saying so its not my fault that does piss me off, but apart from that we are all more or less the same. It would not put me off being friends with some one, people can be very shallow unfortunately.

I work in a pharmacy where several of our customers are deaf. I don't treat them any different than the regular customer. However, I do make sure they can understand what I'm saying and if we start losing each other, I make sure that I have a tablet near so we can write down what we are trying to say. I don't think that people who are deaf should be treated any different. Yes, you might not be able to talk at your normal speed, but hey slowing down your talk rate never hurt anyone if anything it can help. Sorry to hear that others don't want to be your friend just because they have to work a little harder on the friendship than with someone who has their hearing. ITs their lose not yours.

I am profoundly deaf on both ears from birth, so know what your on about. the only difference is i was brought up in the hearing community.
However both hearing and deaf people P*ss me off,

Hearing people for being A**holes

And deaf people for being unable to speak cos they don't wear they'er hearing aids thus being offered disability living allowance at a high level, just cos you cant speak / having a terrific standard of education which i was not offered / whining like children to get Casualty on sign language which none of ye watch, i could go on.
Having said this my hearing is probably worst than most of your community and have a cochlear implant.
Need i say more...

To me people are people, being deaf does not mean i feel any different towards them, i have a deaf friend in the US and she's great lady, But she's encountered ignorance and sarcasm for many years !.
I have severe tinnitus and i have noticed how peoples attitudes can change, i don't like wearing my hearing aid as it can make some sounds intrusive, but ive noticed now that people will tend not to bother to try and communicate and basically ignore me, which i find very upsetting and feel alone sometimes too.
I was in hospital for 2 weeks last year and Ive never felt so alone, the other patients and even the doctors and nurses didn't try and communicate, it just seemed like too much trouble for them to try ?.
I'm not saying i know how you feel, but i can kind of understand through the words of my friend and my own experiences too.

Hi Devieeex,

I'm Deaf and I feel the same as you do. What really gets me is the dumb questions posted on Yahoo Answers regarding Deaf people.

Hey, you out there, we, THE DEAF, are reading your messages! I have noticed that many Deaf people, members of Yahoo Answers, hardly ever answer questions posted about Deaf people. Too tacky.

There's one "Who is deaf here?" and it went unanswered. What's the point? What if the question was "Who's white?" what's the point of answering the question? We have the right not to disclose anthing about ourselves.

Here's some questions

how do deaf people learn how to speak?

POSTED SEVERAL TIMES OVER--LOOK UP "SPEECH THERAPY" YOU NINNYS!

Do deaf people hear their own thoughts?
Do people, deaf from birth, have dreams with sounds?
Do deaf people hear a voice in their thoughts or while reading?
How does a deaf/blind person think?

SO? MYOB!!! YOUR CURIOUSITY ISN'T DOING ANYTHING HELPFUL FOR THOSE WITH A HEARING LOSS. THEY ARE JUST BRINGING UP FAR MORE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT DEAF PEOPLE.

What do you think would be worse.. going blind or going deaf?

HOW DO YOU THINK WE FEEL WHEN A QUESTION LIKE THIS GETS POSTED AND WE DEAF PEOPLE WOULD READ THE REPLIES? LOOK UP "AUDISM"!!!!

how does it feel to be deaf?

WHY YOU WANT TO KNOW? STICK GUM INTO YOUR EARS AND GO FOR A WEEK TO SEE WHAT'S IT LIKE!

how do deaf people make popcorn?

EVERYBODY KNOWS YOU USE HEAT, NOT EARS!!

AND FINALLY JOKES ABOUT --a blind, deaf, dumb.deaf person --ARE TASTELESS. I'M SURPRISED YAHOO ANSWERS HAS ALLOWED THESE JOKES TO GO ON AND ON.

I have no problem with deaf people (or Deaf people for that matter - and yes, there is a difference). I recently attended a course from the City Lit here in london on deaf awareness, which also included an introduction to BSL. Even though I learned that generally a maximum of 10% of deaf people in the UK use BSL, I still plan to enrol on my BSL level 1.

I'm really sorry that you had to meet such ignorant and stupid people! That is so awful!

A boy in our neighborhood is nearly deaf. He was one of my best friends when we were kids, but now were leading very different lives (I went away to university ages ago) and so I haven't seen him in ages.
He could speak though. He was wearing a hearing aid and could communicate almost normally. His pronunciation was a little odd sometimes, but I guess that's just because he couldn't understand our heavily accented children's speech and therefor had trouble imitating us.
And the way all children learn language is heavily dependent on imitation, we mustn't forget that.

And my uncle is deaf on one ear. He always feels a bit uncomfortable during family gatherings when everyone is talking at the same time, cause he doesn't hear and understand everything. But that's ok. We just repeat what we said to him and he answers. No big deal.

And in High School I had a really nice biology teacher who was also deaf on one ear. I always felt really sorry for him when the other pupils made fun of him because he couldn't hear them. That's just not fair! My friends and I always tried to help him, cause he was so nice and we thought he doesn't deserve that. But the other pupils were just so rude and thoughtless and just went on. Real shame! My Mum always tried to comfort me with saying that dumb people never die out. I guess she was right.

I don't think I can or should generalize whether I like deaf people. I mean, your hearing ability doesn't necessarily have anything to do with your character, right? As with hearing people there are nice deaf persons and deaf persons I wouldn't consider being nice. That's a bit like asking Do you think people with green eyes are nice? That's just a bodily feature, nothing else. (BTW, I love people with green eyes, cause mine are green too ;-)

One day I want to learn sign language, because I love learning new languages and sign language has always fascinated me.

This was a rather lengthy compilation of my thoughts.
Have a nice day!!
