The very first phrase of the very First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution negates most of the Ten Commandments. Only an idiot who doesn't know them or the law would think they are related. Ten Commandments plaques are a violation of the second Commandment.

Killing and stealing are against the law because they violate other people's RIGHTS, NOT because of anything in the Bible (in which God COMMANDS his followers to steal and kill).

Because they are the basis for the Bill of Rights:
1. Only God can provide freedom of press, religion, speech, assembly, petition, etc... because if we held other Gods they would deny these rights.

2. We need guns to prevent people from making graven images.

3. If I don't have to quarter troops, I have no reason to take the Lord's name in vain.

4. If police keep the sabbath holy, they cannot commit an unreasonable search and seizure on the sabbath.

5. You honor your parents by not incriminating yourself.

6. As long as I don't kill anybody, I'll get a speedy trial.

7. If I'm on trial, I shouldn't commit adultery with my peers because they might be on the jury.

8. If I don't have to post an excessive bail, I have no reason to steal.

9. I can't lie to my neighbor and tell him the Constitution doesn't protect his rights.

10. The federal government should not covet the rights given to the states, and the states should not covet the rights given to the federal government.

See? It's so obvious!

Well, you seem to already be just about as informed about the answer to your question already, but further elaboration assuredly will put you at ease. I grew up a Roman Catholic Christian, and grew up around the idea that our law system was mostly influenced by God's Ten Commandments. I believe it is because before and during the founding of America's independence, pretty much 100% of political figures and leaders and law makers, those men who created our government/social system, were of Christian faith. Therefore, most of the ideals behind what was considered the greater good of American commonwealth was influenced strongly by Christian ideals. However, through time and realization of many conflicts of interests/ideas, the decision-makers realized that change was necessary and that the Constitution will be an ever-changing law system because of ever-changing times and people, thereby making the amendments. So as you said, most of the commandments do not exist in our system, but actions like kidnapping, bribery and extortion could fall under the category of stealing. Additionally, many less educated minds could be expected to state that the basis of our legal system is from the Ten Commandments because they understand the last five laws to be universal laws of common sense which would undoubtedly hold precedent in our law system.

Actually many societies have much stronger laws relating to number 9, the First amendment is particularly well defended in the USA.

Nice way of putting it but you have to know that many Christian responses will be that the USA should revert to the mythical time when people had more religion in their lives.

Seriously. Coveting is the basis of capitalism.

And to the fella above, of course society would be better if we all CHOSE to worship in the same manner... but it would really suck if it was forced upon us. But if that's what we're gonna do, I must insist that MY way be the only way, not yours.

*sigh*

And further, to the guy below who sites history as his source... so a letter says that the constitution was based on the 10 commandments, four of which the constitution makes illegal to legislate straight away and three of which we have never legislated in over 225 years of lawmaking, and you still think that letter trumps the facts? Dude... learn to process information!

Laws, codes, knowing right from wrong...predates the bible. I don't know why intelligent, caring people would need a book to tell them it is wrong to kill, steal, etc.

These "commandments" were directed at a certain group of people at a certain point in time by men. That they reflect a basic knowledge of right and wrong in parts is to be expected.

Just because you don't like it doesn't change it. It is factual and proven from letters during time of writing Constitution that this was the background of all our nation and it's laws. I know it is being renounced now but it doesn't change a thing to deny it. When the first ship from England came ashore, the first shipload of people planted a cross (of Jesus Christ) in the sand on that shore and read a Bible passage, thanked Jehovah God for their safe arrival and took communion and dedicated this land to God.
Scream, cry, fall out in an anger fit, kick and holler..., but why would you ever try to renounce and decry the only thing that has made this nation special and wonderful and blessed??
It is the only nation that anyone risks their lives to enter, legally or illegally.., it is the BEST nation in the world and you are just deceived or ignorant of the truth and facts!

Simple. You can't claim the United States of America was founded as a theocracy without lying.

It appears their faith is too weak to survive without government welfare.

Because it is the original law. It is from God and is perfect to base a society on. If everyone obeyed this how could society not be a better place. The fact we are taking this away today and twisting it is the cause of many problems with our laws and the system.
