The term highway is what people once called a TOLL ROAD, in the 1940's a lot of roads were being built and when a state or county didn't have the tax money to build the road, they would need some way to pay for the road so they collected TOLL to cover the cost of the road. So the highest cost way to get anywhere made everyone call it the high way. The FREEWAY was the road that didn't have a TOLL BOOTH and no toll was taken to travel on that road. An Interstate highway means that the road goes all the way through that state, from state line to state line. Road numbers that are even like 2,4,6,8,10,20, and so on means that the road runs east and west, odd number roads like 1,3,5,7,9,11,15,17,75 means that these roads runs north and south. I hope this helps.

"Freeways" usually refer to the Interstate Highway System, indicated as I20, I70, I35, I45, etc.
Most cities also have by-passes/loops, 410,610, etc. which junction with the Interstates.
Some cities have outer loops which are Tollways.

The even number Interstates travel East/West.
Odd numbers, North/South.
