DO NOT DE-CLAW YOUR CAT. IT IS ANIMAL CRUELTY. The claws are used for defense. De-clawing will give the cat an emotional upset. Please educate yourself about this and do NOT do it. please!

Although I agree with most of what the other answerers have said with regard to declawing, I also realize that if you have your mind set on doing it nothing they say is going to change how you feel. Having said that, there is another option. My friend rescues cats and has ended up keeping 12 of them to date (yes 12!!) and she had the vet show her how to TRIM their claws. That way they still have claw left (which grows out just like a human nail does) for emergency climbing and defending themselves but it's just not as long and potentially destructive to furniture, and they don't have to be butchered by having their claws removed! You have to have a professional show you how to do it though, as you can cut back too far and seriously injure the cat. Good luck to you! PS You mentioned "buying" a new cat - unless you are looking for a purebred of some kind, why not look at your local animal shelter and possibly get a kitten there? There are so many unwanted cats and dogs looking for good homes that are stuck in shelters hoping someone will come along and rescue them!!

If you want a cat without claws it might be best to consider getting a plush toy instead of a living cat.
Mother nature made cats with claws and they are a necessary part of their physical and emotional makeup.
Supposedly people have their cats declawed because they are concerned about the possibility of them scratching furniture or people.
The point is that cats are intelligent animals and can so easily be taught not to scratch what you dont want them to scratch.
Your mother didnt have your fingertips removed to stop you from drawing on the walls and because she loved you as you are. Perhaps you could use the same reasoning when thinking of your cat.
I have 2 cats who have all their claws and furniture and carpets without a single scratch. We can live harmoniously with cats and all it takes is some love and communication.
They can easily be discouraged from scratching with a spray bottle of water or even a loud Pssst! from you when you see them do it. But they do need a scratching post.
Declawing is unbelievably cruel. If anyone has told you that it doesnt hurt the cat they are either lying or are repeating a lie someone else has told them. Consider that it is done under anesthetic.
In fact pharmaceutical companies use declawing to test the effectiveness of new anethetics because it is so painful. It is already outlawed in Europe on the grounds of cruelty.
Please do not declaw, it is horrible for the cat and causes a host of behavior problems because of the fact that they will have lost their primary self defense. You dont want that either.

You can call any vet, free of charge, and ask. However, I do hope you realize that this is cruel to the cat. It is akin to removing the first knuckle of a human finger. Also, if the cat is EVER outdoors, even accidentally, it is unable to climb to safety, and less able to protect itself. There are more humane ways to keep a cat from scratching. Provide a scratching post; cover it with catnip to attract it there initially. There are also little covers you can buy for the claws; the vet will know what I'm talking about and can probably do it for you.

Please don't declaw your cat it can be trained not scratch furniture or anything else. Did you know they don't just take out the nails they actually amputate to the knuckle. It's just cruel to do this. I did it once the vet did not explain what the procedure really was and when I found out I was horrified that I had done this to my cat, never again. I have two new cats now and wouldn't ever consider it. Now that your aware of what they do will you still do this, I hope not. When you get your kitten get it scratch posts and teach it to use them, also anytime the kitten uses his claws on you or anything else you must right away gently push the claws in and say NO CLAW firmly it's takes a few days but they get the message. I'm going through chemo right now and if my cat scratches me I'm in big trouble they even know not to knead on me now they are smart and learn quickly. Please don't do this to your cat. Please

If you want a declawed cat - adopt one who has already had this proceedure done... too many risks other wise.
This is considered so cruel its illegal in many countries like England..
KNOW the side effects and risks (vets wont tell you since they are paid to promote the surgery) many refuse to use their litter box or become nervous bitters.. or more scared and timid..
and so on....
if you are concered about furniture - buy claw covers called "SOFT PAWS" or get an older cat or one of a breed known for being less claw agressive (persian)
or simply worry less about your furniture...if your kid colored on the walls would you chop off their fingers?? this is what a declaw does...
DO NOT SUBJECT ANOTHER INNOCENT ANIMAL TO THIS TORTURE.

I'm not sure how much it will cost but be warned, many cats who get de-clawed resort to biting as a form of defense. Although, some cats don't.

It would cost about 100.00.
My cat never went through what people say that happens to cats that are declawed.
no bitting problems
no balance problems
no personality problems
no behavorial problems
can play with toys
can jump up and down from furniture
The cat is asleep during the surgery and then the Vet will have the cat use a special kind of litter until the front paws are healed. My cat is an indoor cat and she is a very happy cat and she able to do everything.

I don't think you should declaw your cat, this is animal cruelty, meaning it can cause your cat to act differently. There are many methods in which, without declawing, you can teach your cat not to scratch you, furniture, and others. You should bring your cat to a professional and trim its nails, not declaw.
