They are figments of Al Gore's imagination.
Pay the man. He wants your money. He's figured out a way to make the British government steal it from you for him.

An idea proposed in Europe. Things that were good for the environment were "credits". Things that were bad were "debits". The owner of a factory causing a lot of pollution could offset his debits with credits earned by planting trees. The economics just don't work. There aren't enough things that people could do for credits that would come anywhere near offsetting the amount of pollution and other damage we're doing. It could be used in a limited way on a small scale, such as within a village or township, and it might be possible to make it work. I guess Gore isn't picky whether the ideas he steals are good or bad.

Carbon Credits is primarily a way for the wealthy and elite to buy their way out of driving little cars and living in mansions with a clear conscience. At the same time they will ask all of us peons to sacrifice for the good of the earth.
Carbon Credits also make money for carbon credit companies. It also makes money for the developers of projects that could not otherwise get investors for because they lose money.
Now lets see ... If I could start a carbon credit company, and starts some wind and solar projects, then I could make money on the suckers donations, AND make money on the project development and construction. Then I would be rich and get a 10,000 Sq. Ft. house and Cadillac Escalade and buy some carbon credits and hold my head up high.

Everyone is allowed a certain level of carbon emissions. If you go over, you have to pay someone who was under for the cost of their extra carbon credits. Excess credits become a commodity.

It's a way to make someone feel better for their actions. Look at it this way. Two people state that they are going on a diet. One person eats all they want, while the other starves. Together the sum of the weights are less than what you started with eventhough Algore is now 10 lbs heaver than when he started this diet.
Same is true with carbon credits. Algore lives as he wants to do but forces others to cut back so he can claim that he's helping.
