I did it back in 1986, and yeah, things are probably different now, but everything everyone above me has said is true. I flew into Sydney and hitchiked up to Cairns stopping along the way. I had a six month visa, and got a job on a sailboat heading north out of the reef up to Guam.
Plenty of work, plenty of beer, plenty of beach. I slept under bridges, in hostels, in the jungles, on the beaches, and had a great time, you will too. As far as buying a vehicle, it's easy enough to hitch a ride around, and gas will be expensive. Look at hitching or taking a bus ride (like a grayhound). Also, take a hammock that you can string up. Believe me, it's worth lugging around. Go with some desert water bags and a canteen or two as well.

If you are thinking of doing bar work you will need a Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate (RSA) and if you are going to be doing any work with poker machines in pubs you will need a certificate for gaming as well. These certificates are available at TAFE colleges and are a one-day course. If you are starting your trip in Sydney there are many backpacker hotels and hostels around Central Station and Sydney TAFE is nearby on Broadway.
Backpacking is huge in Australia and there are many organisations looking after the interests of backpackers. Try Googling "Backpacking Australia" or be more specific with the places you want to see and go from there. Backpacker hotels and hostels will be a good source of information too.
You could get a one year visa but that won't allow you to work for a year. Working visas are restricted to three or six months as far as I know. You can check all the different visas at the Department of Immigration web page at http://www.immi.gov.au

Things may have changed since i did a backpacking trip there 10 years ago - but i doubt by much.
It depends where you start from. There's loads of bar work in places like Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.
As for a van, easy to buy, but just watch the cost of insurance...it can be quite high.

I in basic terms got here back from a staggering backpacking holiday to Australia and New Zealand. you are going to have a staggering time. there is a lot to work out, and the hostels are sparkling, properly controlled and finished of alternative exciting travellers. stay in xaBase hostels...they are the superb possible. once you're in Melbourne, determine to stay on the single in basic terms exterior in St. Kilda....that's a quick tram holiday into city and it is acceptable on a staggering coastline. Have a great holiday!

Just make sure you got the correct visa before you arrive.
You DEFINITELY DO NOT WANT to get into trouble with immigration here.
Also... petrol is quite expensive - be warned if you want to drive around this humungus continent. It can be an expensive exercise.
