Land of 10,000 Lakes: This nickname reminds one of the many lakes in Minnesota. In fact, there are 11,842 lakes that are 10 acres or more. Depending on one's definition of a lake, we have seen numbers as high as 15,000. Minnesota's license plates display the legend "10,000 Lakes."

Michigan has 11,037 inland lakes. There are 11,842 lakes over 10 acres in size in Minnesota. So actually Minnesota has more, and yes Alaska has a ton more.
Hope I helped.

Probably because Minnesota simply chose to be recognized for having 10, 000 lakes while Michigan chose not to be recognized for having 11,000.

Um, because Minnesota has 10,000 lakes?
Alaska has over a million lakes, so if you're basing the quality of a State by the number of lakes for some odd reason, you can go jump in one of your 11,000.
Just for fun...Number of natural lakes in Ohio. Zero.
They are all man made.

Do you think they went around and counted every single lake? How dumb would it be to call Michigan the land of 10,874 lakes, and adding/changing it everytime a new one forms or someone creates a man made one? It's just common sense.

Maybe Michigan should one-up Minnesota and put that on its license plates.
At least Michigan has that going for it.

That's why we are called the GREAT Lake State and not just defined by a number. :)
