hi, bummer on the BP! ok the fast cook oats are great, all they are is shredded rolled ones.
now you grab a handful or two depending on appetite and bowl size... whack em in bowl add enough warm water to cover the volume about a (horizontal )finger width past the oat level.
zapp in microwave for 1.5 min on high. stir and zap for 30? secs more...you will see big lavalike blurts ...watch it doesnt go over the edge. this makes a fairly thick mix..if you like it runny add some hot water at first stirring. dep on microwave may need a few seconds more.
for flavour..add a spoonful of cocoa powder and mix through. also a handfull of sultanas is sweet and healthy too.
use golden syrup, dark brown sugar ..stay clear of aspartame and non sugar nasties!
cream is waaay scrummy. and unless you have cholesterol issues? and really even if you do! it is still more natural. just have less.

some books say add pinch of salt..hmm i reckon it makes it taste weird, but thats me..you may like it. the scots always add salt.
i sometimes dust it with powdered cinnamon, or ginger,or a scrape of a fresh nutmeg.
why? is the bp up? any cause found? be wary of the meds...read all! the info you can before you take em, NOT just the packet info, or the company alone.. google the name and "adverse reactions" before taking any scripted drug.

Adding a little cinnamon and salt when cooking it can make a world of difference. You can also add honey, brownsugar, sugar, syrup, butter, milk, vanialla, any kind of berry or jelly to it. My favorite way is before you cook the oatmeal cube an apple in saute it in a little butter add some cinnamin and brown sugar, like 1 tbsp of sugar and 1/2 tsp of cinnamon. Then cook the oatmeal like the package says and serve the apples on top. Yummy!

Put your uncooked oatmeal into a skillet on medium heat. Stir constantly until the oatmeal has browned. (Cool before putting into a container). This will give a zero calorie, nutty flavor to your oatmeal! Cook as usual.

I like to bake mine becuase I can't stand the consistency.
2 1/2 c. rolled oats
1/2 c. diced walnuts or almonds
1/2 c. sunflower seeds
1/2 c. sesame seeds
1/4 c. wheat germ
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon (optional)
1/2 c. vegetable oil
1/2 c. honey
1/2 tsp. salt
(if you like it with fruit)
1/2 c. raisins
1/2 c. dates
1. In large bowl combine oats, nuts, seeds, wheat germ, brown sugar and cinnamon.
2. In small bowl mix oil, honey and salt. Pour over dry ingredients and mix well.
3. bake (on a large cookie sheet) at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. Stir in raisins and dates the last 10 minutes. Cool and stir.
4. May be stored at room temperature several months in a can.

Here's an answer I'm trying to enter for another help-with-oatmeal-taste question--you can ignore parts of it:
You don't mention what you put on your oatmeal, or in it--most people never eat it plain!
At least it should have some kind of sweetener, and perhaps milk (or almond "milk," etc), and you can change the ingredient proportions before and/or after cooking it to make it firmer or looser, chewier or not, etc.
You can also make "fried oatmeal" the same way fried cornmeal and other grains are done--refrigerate in a casserole dish/etc overnight till fairly solid, then cut sections from that and fry. Add anything you want on top.

Many "granolas" have oats in them so you could make your own and include a lot of oats. They'll also be coated with something sweet, even though they're dry.
Various kinds of coatings for frying and toppings are also made with oats, or you could make them that way.
Oat flour (as well as oats) can be use in breads, cookies and other baked items. You can even make the oat flour in your own food processor with regular rolled oats.
You might really like the new craze of making "overnight oats" though, and that doesn't mean just making oatmeal overnight in a slow cooker, etc. The result is kind of like dessert to me, and the flavor of the oatmeal itself isn't even present. And as a bonus there's no actual cooking involved (though the oats do get softened) and no pan to clean with stuck-on oatmeal.
Overnight oats (aka oats in a jar, overnight oatmeal, etc) can have all kinds of ingredients in it so you can suit it to your tastes too. Here are some links to get you more acquainted with it:

I buy this oatmeal at my SuperTarget. It's all organic blueberry and almonds. It's really good if your diet will allow it.

I've always eaten my oatmeal with soy sauce. Sometimes I'll add a few toasted sesame seeds to it. Everyone wants to make oatmeal sweet... boring! Dont knock the soy sauce till ya try it! :)

I put real butter in while it is still hot and then after is is cooled, I pour a little milk and sprinkle one packet of Equal on it. I also have toast made from wheat bread on the side.
