I'm military, not law enforcement...
You need to broaden your idea of what a weapon is and think of an attack as being "close quarters" meaning you can be grabbed and subdued. In this instance if you carry car keys- they can be a weapon. We train in "field expedient weapons" I clutch the keys so that the end of them stick out about an inch from the end of my palm- with the right amount of force I could stab any artery, or slash at someone's skin.
I would tell you when you speak of "less than lethal" means that violence begets violence... meaning if you up the stakes by striking, there's a chance it could get upped by the attacker.
I consider NO attack to be "less than lethal."
Get a collapsible asp.
And study Jujitsu or other martial arts which focus on manipulation of people's joints.
Sad fact for you- even owning a huge weapon will not make you Chuck Norris in a fight... you have to practice, practice, practice okay. I'm assuming since you're asking this that you feel in danger. That makes this serious- take it that way.
The second amendment is a beautiful thing...

go to packing.org or com.. can't remember which... it gives you a state by state break down of laws/regulations/permit info for guns.
conatct your local police if you need info on what sort of things you can carry for protection at all times and what you can open carry and conceal carry.
yeah and the slightly illegal part- if it's any bit illegal it's not worth carrying
you can also ask the police about the legalities of a civilian carrying a taser/stun gun... it's all about regulations and permits as to what civilians can carry
don't be foolish
if you have a real problem bring it to the attention of the police for assistance.
and you might want to ask the police about what happens if you use lethal force on someone, what are the self defense laws in your area etc

OK - first of all, unless you are a sworn officer, you cannot carry an ASP or a Taser.
There are "stun guns" on the market that are powerful and legal, and will give you enough time to get away. OC is a good alternative, and it now comes in a concentrate so strong that it will practically melt paint off the walls. It works well unless your attacker is under the influence of PCP or very drunk. It is important that if you purchase one of these, that you learn how to use it, and HAVE IT IN YOUR HAND when you are walking in an unsafe area. Your attacker is not going to give you time to dig through your purse.
Also, if you purchase any of these, consider it a means to give yourself time to get away. Use it, and then start running and screaming for help. You are not obligated to help your attacker or get first aid for him/her.
Finally, if you are in a situation where you must walk alone to your car, home, etc., wear shoes you can RUN in. Stay alert and carry yourself confidently. The less you appear like a victim, the better your chances are of not becoming one.

You sound like there is a specific reason you need to protect yourself. If I'm somewhere or in a situation where I may need a gun, I'll be sure to have a gun. I don't know of many gun laws or weapons laws that will stop an attacker.
Best to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 as they say.

apart from weaponry and also with weaponry
you can
keep within peoples sight everywhere you go
as much as possible
walk along with your head up and look assertive
and appear that you know exactly where you are at
and where you are going to
never walk along looking unsure where you are going
ie:frequently looking around or keep stopping and starting
and looking lost in general [ dont look like a tourist]
try and avoid any sustained eye contact with strangers when approaching and passing them on the pavement/sidewalk
say no to all stranger requests ie:time please,do you know where such and such is or can you give me change of a £ $
or have you got a light please, say (no i havent sorry) or( no i do not sorry) or( no i cant im afraid) also keep moving and walking along from the point of the request right through to when you are saying no,dont stop once, but slow down a bit if you need to.
carry a whistle or a panic alarm [very high noise screeching device with a bright flashing strobe light built in]
basically do not take short cuts that are risky
just to save time or get to a place on time
its not worth it,you may be late but you arrive
in one peice,or arrive at all
use common sense and awareness
for all round personal safety
but if you are a very handy and capable type of person
when it comes to using a uzi sub machine gun
or have a knack for strategically launching grenades
that direct hit on to chosen targets
and it was you who invented most
of the marines corps knive throwing techniques
then you can walk along any road day or night on your own like you own the place without a care in the world
whenever you choose to
i wish you a very good life and a very safe life
