--Bill Cosby.

Cosby had a girlfriend in college who was a philosophy major...she walked around asking questions like this. Cosby, studying physical education, would respond, "Any phys-ed major knows why there's air! There's air to blow up volleyballs, basketballs..."

Stuff like that is funny to me.

These ( " ) are quotation marks. They signify that one is quoting from a given source. We know this by these (--), followed by the author's (or speaker's) name, or the title of the book, or song, or whatever it may be.

Is this the Deadly Serious category?

Mu. (The only appropriate answer to a loaded question.)

This is an example of the complex question fallacy. The question assumes that there is a reason for the existence of air, an assumption that has not been established in fact. This is like asking, "What does a fire truck mean?" The question is invalid, as it presumes that fire trucks have "meaning" to begin with.

EDIT:
My point exactly. "Meaning" is highly subjective, unless we're talking about actual attempts at communication.

So that eagles can soar to the heavens.
So that eagles can soar above the clouds and realize that the sun is still shining while the rain is quenching the earths thirst.

May man soar like the birds of the air!

Great question, and there are so many potentially great answers that I just can't decide which one to choose.

It's a 'gas', isn't it ? ;-)))
