In a past life (before children) my wife and I loved old Volkswagens. We owned bugs, buses, and types 3s. We did most of the work of rehabbing ourselves and still have most of the specialty tools. Now that the kids are getting older and leaving us time to do the things we use to love doing, we want to find our ultimate old VW and restore it. The question is where is the best place to find an old VW . In the past we looked in the want adds and used word of mouth to find VWs. But with the VWs getting harder to find and considering what the northeast does to cars we are looking to find VW from a no road salt area. We are willing to go anywhere in the contiguous US to get our project. Are there any great VW junkyards around? Does anyone know of any dealers in old VWs? We are ideally looking for a car we can redo from the ground up but will be willing to look at almost any condition and make VW pre 1970.

ok.. As an 'old phart' myself I have been having fun buiding my own also.. here is what worked for me

Forget dealers. there are none except for those that deal with classics or antiques.

Next... decide what kind of VW you want bugs are easier to find along with parts. Buses generally take more work. Convertible bugs or the bus's with a zillion windows are gems and will fetch a high price even as a rusty shell. Choose wisely grasshopper.

1) Start with Craigslist for a locals source (where ever you are) (www.craigslist.org).

2) Next go to eBay... remember to ask questions.. the photos will NEVER show you all the problems.

3) If you are near Northern Calif. contact me. I know of a yard where the owner has about 20 bugs in various stages of disrepair.

good luck -

You could also try www.recycler.com which usually has tons of bugs and also the samba has many good ones too.

I got a 72 with a hipo 1600 I need to get rid of since I no longer have the space.

Try e Bay or post wanted ads on Gumtree or Craigslist......I have noticed a few beetles for sale but ur talking big money you could buy a new & much safer car (ie crumple zones, air bags) for the same.............if you want to import one from the UK I could offer to keep a look out for you.
