My female cat is in heat, and about 5 days ago she got out of the house for 4 days. She has never been an affectionate cat, but since she has come back she has become more and more agressive towards the other animals and people in the house. Earlier today her bottom lip became swollen. I'm afraid she might be rabid or something, should I keep her in lock up untill I can take her to the vet on monday? PLEASE help I love her and do not want to treat her unfairly, if she is rabid, would she already be showing symptoms, or do female cats become agressive when pregnant?

If she had contracted rabies she wouldn't be symptomatic yet, the symptoms take at least two weeks to appear.

I think it is very likely your cat got into a fight, and even more likely that she is now pregnant. That's just what happens when unspayed female cats get out! I bet there were loads of males fighting over her.

Take her to a vet asap, get her checked over and get her booked in to be spayed. You can have this done up until nearly mid term in the pregnancy (so you've got about 3 weeks to get it sorted). Spay her now for her own health.

While you're at it, get her her rabies and other vaccinations.

What sex are your other cats? firstly if your cat was in season when she got out then she has probably been caught and is pregnant, has she had all her vaccinations, is everything up to date? I am sorry for asking all these questions but I am trying to eliminate possibilities. Her bottom lip being swollen could be due to her having a spat with the other cats in your house. Some cats can be aggressive when they are pregnant especially with toms. Can I ask what country you are in? is Rabies something that is rife where you live? If she has had her jabs then she will be ok. If it was me I would be of to the vet ASAP I wouldn't wait till Monday. Hope this helps can you answer the questions I have asked. Hope all is ok

My cats bottom lip did that, could be an allergic reaction to something she ate while out or a gum or tooth problem. I don't think she is rabid or she would be foaming at the mouth as well. She is probably being mean because she is in pain and doesn't want anyone touching her. She does need to see a vet and be spayed, they can still spay her even if she is pregnant.

Geez, no rabies vaccination? Not spayed?
If she's acting aggressively she may be in pain.
She may have had a fight, in which case she may develope
an abcess, a soft, fluid filled lump- really common in cats who go outside.
You don't have to lock her up.
If she was gone for 4 days she's pregnant by now.
Cat mating is sometimes a pretty rough scene- especially when more than one male is after her...she can have kittens who have different fathers.
She probably had a bunch of cat fights.
You can get her spayed now, even if she is pregnant...now there would be just a microscopic egg and she should be spayed while she's not in heat.
She would be a nicer pet.

if she has a swollen lip, she was probably bitten by an insect that she is allergic to...you should get her to the vet for an anti-venom shot...i doubt she's rabid...there are some vets who work on sundays, but if your's won't be in until tomorrow, you would only need to crate her if she is hurting you or the other animals...however, she could be a danger to herself when she's i great pain...so if you feel secure enough to put her in a crate/carrier, that's where she should be until you can find out exactly what caused her lip to swell...our dogs were always allergic to bees, wasps and spiders...

Female cats don't normally become aggressive
when they are pregnant. My cousins cat has had
birth about three times and has never been agressive.
She's been even more loving.

So yes, Monday take her to the vet!!!!!

Indoor cats still need vaccinations for various health risks. Consider separating her from the rest until you can get to the vet. I don't need to preach to you that it is important to spay or neuter your cats so there are no unwanted animals out there!

I work in a veterinary clinic...and the best answer is to lock her in a bathroom away from the other pets and people in the house until you can get her to a veterinarian's office...or take her to a pet ememgancy room.
