How would you get rid of the waste if you couldn't recycle it?

Contrary to the above answers, radioactive waste is very recyclable. By reprocessing, spent nuclear fuel can be converted to usable new fuel with a net recovery of nearly 96% of the original waste volume. It is done currently in Japan and France. The technology is solid; the problem in the US is purely political. The fear is that the reprocessed waste can be bomb grade material, so we prefer to let spent fuel sit idle for centuries until it decays naturally to a safe level. A better example of what can't be recycled is all of the mercury that is spewed into the environment by coal burning power plants, which we seem to find preferable to safe nuclear power.

Getting rid of it is between the businesses and the politicians who get their campaign funds from them. That is why Global Warming has progressed as it has.

I believe spent nuclear fuel rods can't be recycled. Instead, I believe they are buried in the desert. At least at one point there was legislation being debated that would allow the spent fuel rods to be buried deep within the Yucca Mountain range.
