The best bet is to not let him out for at least 2 weeks. Let him look out windows for awhile so he can get to know his surroundings. If possible when you let him out the first time go outside with him and just kinda hang out while he explores. This will make him feel a little safer. I prefer keeping my cats indoors if possible myself but I know some do love to go outside. Hope that helps! Best wishes.

Yeah, cats are VERY territorial
he might try to find his old house
so what I would do is make him
an inside cat.

Buy him a litter box, and some
litter, so he doesn't have to go out-
side. Also buy Purina Indoor Cat
Formula, which is good for adult
indoor cats. Get one of those
water bowls that has running
waterfalls, it will make him
drink more.

Get him one of those
heated cat beds, it
will make him feel
much happier, and
warm. The reason
it needs to be he-
ated is because
the heat reminds
them of when they
were first born, they
had to find there mom
by heat.

If you are worried about
him scratching up your
furnature you could buy
him Soft Paws. Which
you can find at your
local Petco. Or Petsmart.

Hope This Helped!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't let the cat out for at least 3 weeks. The cat needs to learn that this is his new home before you can be sure he'll return if you let him out. Presumably he's neutered.

The old 'butter on the paws' thing is a silly myth - cats don't like mess on their paws, they will lick anything off and yes, this might distract them from leaving but that's all it will do! And it makes them fat if done too often!

Don't worry cats aren't usually the kind of animals to do this- its generally dogs. What i suggest is making sure your cat is both collared and microchiped. Just in case.

Also try getting a leash for your kitty and taking them out for a short amount of time each day. Let them know your right there and nothing can hurt them. However you do need to let them out to explore and make a new territory or they will never settle in.

Good Luck

Don't let him out!! Cats tend to stick to what they know...some will go in search of their old habitat, in which case you will never see your cat again. If you need to put him out for some reason and don't want an indoor cat, (outdoor cats life expectancy is less than an indoor cat because of outside elements, wild animals and people (aka/cars)). you should stick with him and let him get used to the area..Once he is alone he may never come home. Good Luck!
