I often get a piecing sharp pain in one of either of my ears that only lasts for about a second at a time - sometimes I get a short ringing whistling sound (like the sound of a tuning fork)that comes after it - could it be an infection developing?

Yep you may have an infection on the way or it could be a dental problem. Any toothaches at all?

It's probably congestion. Do you have a stuffy nose at the same time?

I have this myself sometimes and find that usually it is just better to leave it alone - after all, it doesn't really get in the way of you life for too long, does it?

Have you ever suffered with ear wax? (Okay, disgusting subject, I know). What you could have is a block Eustachian (not sure of the spelling!) tube. It is the tube that carries the wax from the ear into the throat. That is the way that the crud is taken away from the ear. Have you ever been able to HEAR your pulse? That is a definite sign. It isn't necessarily an infection, but does need decongestants.

Before you visit your doctor, trying having a word with you local pharmacist! Quicker and just as knowledgeable - and can usually suggest some less expensive medication.

Let us know how you get on.

it also sounds similar to the symptoms of tinitus.
damage from noise causes you to have a ringing or whistling sound.

but its would be best for you to check it out with your doctor, as could just be an infection of somekind. you also get ringing in your ears if you have an infection of the inner ear, this usually affects you balance aswell though.

Hope you feel better soon.

If you have had a cold you probably need to clear your sinuses with an inhalant.
