As a female in the Army I dealed with this. My unit was designated Gun Trucks so our job was to provide security for convoys. I was expected to get behind the 50 cal like any man in our unit. Although we cannot get into an MOS that directly deals with combat like the infantry, we are in combat.

Women now and days are banging doors down just like men. Women are not in combat jobs, but all of our primary jobs are to be a soldier first.
Even the Minuit task of going on a convoy, if it gets attack that is combat right there, and believe me women are doing it every day.
Women are fighting in ground combat because there is no choice. This is a war with no front lines or safe zones.

The only thing close to combat for women that I'm aware of is an MP (military police.) Most jobs can be involved in combat at some point, for example if the convoy is ambushed, etc.

Women are in combat all the time. They arent allowed to have combat specific MOS's but they get into combat in many jobs whether it be truck driver, blackhawk crew cheif, MP, and technically, seeing as alot of the combat in Iraq was an attack on US convoys, then ANY person in ANY jobcan be in combat when they're enroute from one place to another.

There are no front lines and no Identifiable enemy in Iraq or Afghanistan:
WOMEN WILL BE SHOT, BLOWN UP AND KILLED!!!
For obvious biological reasons women are NOT ideal subjects for the "sustained combat" of yesteryear...
But Kudos to them from an Infantryman; they seem to be doing just fine right now.

Women have been in direct combat in ALL the wars fought by the US, In the War of Northern Aggression, many women disguised themselves as men and fought in many battles, both as enlisted and officer personnel and with distinction.

Here's a great site to research women's roles in the military-
http://members.aol.com/veterans/warlib66.htm
and yes, women do indeed see and get involved in firefights.
Got a female 88M who's seen more crap in 1 year than most ER doctors see in a month....and has severe PTSD as a result.

Yeah women usually join the MP Corps, since that is the closest thing to infantry that they can get to. Once they join the MP's they are pretty much going to go to battle. They get involved in the same shooting and bombing that takes place over there all the time.
