Your neighbour was probably told to give garlic simply because dogs like garlic & it may encourage the dog to eat. There is nothing wrong in giving garlic to dogs - the idea that it's toxic is simply not true, it's been used as a herbal remedy for years.

First thing your neighbour needs to do is take the dog to the vet, so it can have a decent balanced food to build up its strength & make sure it's not dehydrated (it must have drunk something if she's had it a week)
Good luck, anyway

I was staying on an organic farm once where they had two dogs. They fed them a small amount of fresh garlic to their dogs everyday and it helped with keeping fleas off them. It didn´t do them any harm. I would use a small bit of fresh garlic though, as garlic tablets are concentrated. As for trying to help your neighbours jack russell to eat, I think a bit of TLC and patience will go a long way. If she has rescued it, I would assume the dog has been to the vet already (if not a trip will definitely help). Try getting a pippette and using it to get fluids into him.

First thing to do is go to a vet to find out what state of health this dog is in, because it doesn't sound great. There may be health issues underlying the not eating rather than just being scared.

I don't see how garlic tablets are going to help anything. Who told you to give them?

some dogs, i know my grandads jack russell did every day, eat raw garlic cloves. my grandad always said that it was good for the respiration system and lots of other things. he lived to a ripe old age of 85 bless him and the dogs still going and still has 3 cloves of garlic a day. if its good for people, its gotta be good for the dogs too.
i would say this dog needs to be given anything it could eat. i know vets say dont, but try human food like bacon to start off if it wont touch dog foods.anything to get the por thing to eat. cod liver is a good supliment for animals as it contains lots of vitamins and oils to give a good coat and keep the dog healthy.
main thing is to get the dog to eat and drink. now i know this sounds cruel, but get a water pistol and squirt water in his open mouth if he wont drink - he could die from dehydration otherwise. my dog was the same - he fretted for his old owner but once we had a water fight in the garden and i wook him out a few times to the lake, he settled well and started to drink and eat because he knew he was going to be loved i guess. or cos he didnt want the water pistol every time i saw him panting. dont know which it was.
anyway good luck hope i've helped?
if in dount or the dog deteriorates go to a vet as they can give nutrients through injections and tablets given there and then. they may offer more advice.

i had my dog in exact the same way. She was very thin hardly able to stand, very depressed very scared, i took her straight to my vet, they told me there that because she hadnt had the correct diet her organs were failing, they put her on a special diet which i had to practally force down her, but after a few days she had the strength to do it alone. It took me 2 years to get her right, ie weight, the way she was with us, trust etc. Any decent vet will help her. good luck.

The garlic thing ive heard before, think its an old wives tale to prevent her from getting fleas, but thats the last of your worries. I would never give garlic to any of my animals.

forgot to add, make some warm water mixed with sugar and small amount of salt, this will make a make shift solution of glucose for energy, its really good saves money by not having to go out to buy tonic, other wise your vet will have a good solution called critical care which you can buy from them for around £15. good luck

the only thing garlic will help cure is fleas ..its a natural flea repellant and giving garlic tablets will kill any infestation from the inside , giving the tablets will NOT harm the dog and can also be given safley to cats ..iv treated my dogs with the garlic method for years will no ill effects ..its the most natural way to treat fleas without spraying them with fleas spray etc..i done my research and am not doing the dogs any harm ..check out the dorwest herbs webpage if you dont believe me..re:the food id take him to the vet xx

mistreated, thin, refusing to eat and drink=trip to the vet ASAP. If the dog was not taken care of, he probably hasn't had any shots, or been treated for worms. Whatever the case, he needs a vet asap, as he cannot go long without food and/or water.

the thing about garlic isnt rubbish at all, it has it own goodness...same as cider vinegar added to water or food daily and cod liver oil.

but if this dog is under weight and not eating it needs to go to the vets straight away!.... he may have a medical condition which is preventing it from eating.

Please dont give garlic tablets to a dog..if you check with the vet Garlic can be toxic to dogs. Tell them to try Bob martins tonic drops for dogs or a vitamin suppliment instead.. If the dog has been abused it will take some time for it to recover from all its been throgh. All it takes is TLC and it should be fine.

i do agree you should seek vets advise before feeding your dog garlic but i used to work with grey hounds and we fed them garlic mashed into their food every day, it helps with the circulation,
