I had recently just bought a 81 Dodge Mirada but it was over heating. I just recently found out that the cooling fan just spins on the on the shaft even with out the engine running. Even when I would start the car the fan would spin slowly and never catch up with how fast the shaft was spinning with the belt

That car uses a fan clutch, which allows the fan to spin freely, when it is not needed to cool the radiator! It sounds like the fan clutch is bad. It is a relatively easy job replace the fan clutch. All you need are basic wrenches and a bit of time!

You can buy a fan clutch at any auto parts store. It will run you around $40.

<>Sounds like the set screw that holds the fan blade on the shaft is missing or loose. Does the blade slide off the shaft? If that's not the problem, then most likely the pulley hub is broken.
