First off, no body goes to a bar for one drink. Don't drive at all when you drink, it's not an opinion. It's fact. Go to a bar close to home and take a cab both ways. While some people can handle 1 drink and drive safely, you have no alcohol tolerance at ALL right now. Give the keys to some one else.
As for drinks.. start with beer. Sam Adams Boston Lager is a good domestic, has a good flavor and it'll get the job done. If you've never done any drinking then it'll take you a bit to get used to the taste of alcohol so you don't want to switch to anything hard but you should also avoid the temptation of those girly foo-foo drinks. ;)
Once you've gotten aquainted with the taste of alcohol, try a Manhatten. They're delicious, mostly whiskey, bitters, and vermouth. Though a bartender who knows his stuff will use Rye instead of the more common canadian whiskey (Gross.)

Don't drive. If you've never drunk before, then you don't know how alcohol will affect you. Better to be safe than sorry, hey? and remember it's not just your life you gamble with when you drink & drive. One accident (that's all it takes) could not only kill someone but also RUIN YOUR LIFE. Is it worth it? No...spend a few bucks and take a cab.
Don't drink spirits. Just stick with beer or wine. Have a few drinks, a few laughs and call it a night. No point in going from Zero to 100 in the first night. There's plenty of time to drink more and drink spirits later. You don't have to do it all in the one night.
BTW, Remember the golden rule of never mixing your drinks...choose a drink and stick to it, otherwise you'll pay come morning. Here's another tip: 3 Vitamin Tablets and a glass of water before bed will rehydrate your body while you sleep. It will make all the difference in the morning!

Never drink booze then drive, your risking your life and the lives of others. The law is cracking down on this too- you can get jail time, a serious fine, and lose your license. But worst of all- you can kill someone. If you drink and drive make sure you have one drink (of minimal alcohol content) and make sure you wait at least an hour after that drink (the average person metabolizes 1 ounce of alcohol an hour).
As for what to order try a beer (lager or guinness), or have an Adios Motherf*cker. If you go to a place with a small selection of booze my old standby is always a Tequila Sunrise.

Lol, try ordering a glass of water : P
Seriously, if you've never ever had alcohol before, then going to a bar to try it is probably not the most brilliant idea. You need to get used to the alcohol and for most first timers, 3 shots of anything strong usually means they have an excuse to turn into slobbering idiots. My advice is order a beer at the bar and just sit back and relax with friends, the whole point of going out to bars is to meet and mingle with people, not make like Jekyll and Hyde after a few shots of whiskey. You can try the hard liquors at a party at home where you can puke all you want and not make a fool of yourself in public, you also don't have to worry about driving home. Tequila is usually the poison of choice for most people these days, they claim the hangover is not as bad as with other drinks, yeah right, I once blacked out after several shots of Tequila Poppers and went to pee in front of a police station, then proceeded to hurl what was left of my dinner onto the street as an afterthought, luckily the cops were on a good mood that night and just laughed it off and told my friend to take me home before I did something stupid like pulling my pants down and crapping on the street, so a hangover is probably the least of your worries when drinking Tequila.
Just an important reminder: Whatever you do, never drink on an empty stomach and take a taxi home or better yet, walk home, the fresh air will do you good. And don't forget to drink lots of water before going to bed and upon waking up, it minimizes dehydration and lessens the headache.
And oh, my favorite drink is a sweet Manhattan, I prefer Jim Beam in it than other brands.

Dude, don't drink and drive. If you promise yourself to only have 1 then it's ok. Other than that ask yourself if you are ready to go to jail, lose your license, and pay a couple grand in fines. Not worth a night of drinking. Especially if you want to get that nice job later in life. Now the ordering part depends on what you like. If you want to stay trim then go with Michelob Ultra which is low on calories. If you are a beer drinker which you stated you haven't so try it first. If beer is not for you go with some Bailey Irish cream on the rocks. Tasty and a chill drink. It tastes like sweet chocolate. A good drink if you want to feel pumped and mac with the ladies is Grey Goose and Redbull. Expect to pay a decent chunk of change though, 6 buck in my parts of town. Try these and if you don't like them come back

Happy 21th Birthday (Boozeday)
I emphasize responsible drinking. Check the maximum BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) allowed in your State if you intend to drive a vehicle.
The key is experimentation, explore different kinds of wine and beer. First the basic, not so sophisticated ones at first, then expand your limits.
There's no right or wrong, it's only what suits YOUR taste.
For wine, if you're buying bottles, keep them under $20 until you develop your palate. Try Cabernet Sauvignon for Reds. For whites try Chardonnay based wines.
And about liquors, don't take ice with whiskey, it dilutes it and masks its flavor. Again, experiment with the basic ones (tequila, margaritas, gin&tonic, mojitoes), then progress.
Have fun

I love pina coladas, because they are great, you have to be a coconut fan to like them though. Try any fruity drink, it hides the alcohol taste. I'd say you'd be okay to drive after one drink, then hanging out for at least an hour after the drink, with just drinking soda or water. Be sure to be a responsible drinker and know your limits before driving.

Guinness is good, and there are a lot of good wines out there. You should probably stay away from hard liquor until you have gotten to know your limits. Definitely avoid Long Island Iced Teas...you'll be on the floor before you know what happened.
