First of all, get a dog trainer to insure you do this right for best results, but I would say keep the song on a leash all day, all night, yep, it's alot of work, but it's your dog. Any motion concerning the trash, whether it's sniffing it, licking it, whatever, yell no! That's your word, not bad boy, no. Don't scream it, but in a raised, loud voice. You shoudl also work on walking your dog too, that has alot to do with it, how much energy it has.
(P.S, if you have a closed lid, if there ever is a case where trash is out, and your dog chokes on it and dies, well, that's a stupid choice in the firt place, it needs to know right from wrong, don't be lazy)

I keep the trash can off the floor in the kitchen. My chihuahua still eats the couch. We had to have some of it dug out of her rectum not that long ago. I have no idea how to keep them from chewing. It is just a dog thing. They have toys, but prefer to chew grass cuttings and couch string.

As the person before me said, the trash cans with a lid that only opens if you step on the lever are great! We switched all of our cans over to those, and it took care of the problem.

Make sure you keep and eye on them and passably get a trash can with a lid thats closed until you step on that lever thing at the bottom.
