What the heck!? if it's 720x480, 720/480=3/2, so it's obviously a 3:2 aspect ratio, NOT a 4:3. 640x480 is 4:3.

so how can it be both 4:3 AND 720x480???

The tv's aspect ratio is 4:3 and the 720*480 resolution is usually a widescreen (480i or 480p) letterbox format where you will see black bars on the top and bottom.....so the picture shown onscreen between the black bars is 3:2 while the entire tv screen is 4:3

Whatever the aspect ratio is you get the same amount of picture , letterbox effect just stretches the recieved pic to fit the screen , like wise 4:3 ratio is the same pic only made to fit. check the 2 sizes in a shop side by side and you will see that you still have the whole picture on either ratio

A normal TV has an aspect ratio of 1.33 : 1 which is also 4:3 (4 divided by 3 = 1.33 ) I don't know what you mean by 720x480.What do these figures represent ?

You're absolutely right...Those numbers don't make any sense...Some advertiser hasn't done their homework.
