I work in the hotel industry....call the hotel direct.
Those sites charge the hotel $4-20 for every reservation. We pass that cost to you...in addition that travel site also makes their profit from you...another $10-20 on top of our rate.
On average the hotel will charge you about $30 less to book direct...we won't charge you fees and we already have a staff to take your reservation.

Frankly I did better on search. Occasionally the principles themselves might eliminate the middle man. Any way you can do that, helps. You have to check more than one for the best deals and the last minute deals are no deals at all, but higher.
