My hair used to be pitch black but now it is more like the medium golden brown shown here:

I am due to have a baby this month and would normally dye all my hair black but I heard it's dangerous for the baby if dye gets on your skin, so I want to get some highlights to freshen my look and cover my gray hairs I've been getting since I was 17. I'm not afraid of color, just want it to look good.
Thanks for your opinions.

Bleach blonde is out of the question. I don't like blonde hair and I want my hair to look natural.

A few of us, myself included, are allergic to the chemicals in tints for hair, but very few of us. Even for me, just getting some tint on your skin is not a problem. If your OB said it's a problem, then do be careful.
The haircut you chose is excellent for you. Be sure to leave it long enough to be pulled back into a ponytail. I say this because young children often grab at mom's hair and don't let go. It's part of their physical development, they don't have any idea it's a problem.
Given your current color, I would say you would look great by using streaks of 9 and 9.3. The two tones will give a nice dimension to your hair, and look especially good when your hair catches the light or the sun. Have fun.

I agree with the other person who answered, I think you should get bleach blonde highlights. I have golden brown hair too and I got bleach blonde highlights a few months ago, At first I was kind of worried about how it would turn out and after it was done, I loved it. Even though I got it done a few months ago, I still like it and it still looks good.

Maybe try light golden brown, or dark blonde
