It is the sign of the cross. A large cross traced from forehead to breast and from shoulder to shoulder. Hail Mary is a prayer.
Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of death.
Amen.
EDIT-
I really don't get when people cannot answer the simplest questions without telling people that it is evil or crazy. The question was "What is this?" not "what is your opinion of this?".

Many of the problems you may be facing could be just the tip of the iceberg on what is really happening in your marriage. I dont mean to scare you but many problems when they either first show up or if they keep reoccurring could be just whats showing from a larger problem that either you or your spouse cannot even see. One of the only things you can do to help is to talk honestly and openly with each other in the marriage. If things become more serious more serious options need to be looked at as possibilities. I have a blog that has more information on some of what I've been writing about. If you feel like checking it out I would completly suggest it. Read here https://tr.im/q3oea

Love is a choice that is made everyday when you wake up and every night when you go to sleep. Some days you may not feel the original feeling but love isnt a feeling or an emotion. Its an action a verb. Falling out of love may just mean you need to spice things up a little or that you were never in love in the first place. Don't just get out of a marriage just because you don't think you like the person anymore.

the sign of the cross
head- you say "in the name of the father"
naval area/heart- "and of the son"
right shoulder/ left-"and the holy(left) spirit(right) amen"
http://www.fisheaters.com/sign.html

the site explains why it is done, its origins and what it means.

the hail mary

hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee
blessed art thou aamongst women and blessed
is the fruit of thy womb jesus

holy mary, mother of god
pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death
amen
this prayer especially the first portion can be found directly in scripture, namely the gospel account of luke.

catholics make the sign of the cross prior to prayers, it is also done at the beginning and ending of the mass.
as some have stated prayer to the dead is not forbidden in scripture, not only that the blessed mother is more alive than anyone on this earth as she is alive in heaven.
try www.scripturecatholic.com

more importantly for those criticising catholicism, read the bible in context adn learn how the bible came to us through the catholic church, without the catholic church there would be no bible.

hope this helped and god bless.

First of all it's "up, down, LEFT, right";) and then, it's the symbol of the Christian cross, it represents respectively the Father (up), the Son (down), and the Holy (left), Spirit (right).

It's NOT Hail Mary, since Hail Mary is a prayer and not a gesture. Christians cross themselves at the beginning and at the end of each prayer, saying "amen".

Note: it is UP Down Left and Right (not the other way)

Descripition:
UP - from heaven (up)
Down - Jesus came DOWN to this Earth
Left - Jesus got crucified on the Cross
Right - Jesus now is Seated on the RIGHT hand of God

BUt am not a Catholic now.
The Word says "..theres only one mediator between God And Man, ChristJesus alone...I Tim 2:5" so we are not to have Mother Mary as our mediator.

In Catholic chrch they have a belief that miracles happen through the intervention of Mary. So they use theterm whenever a miracle happen.

BUT Jesus told, "Whatsoever ye shall ask in My name, the same shall be done unto you that MY Father may be glorified in me"

I am born-again, spirit filled Christian would love to carry the Word of the Good News to the lost.

Amen and God Bless you.

The sign of the cross- it's a sign between you and someone else, like a pledge of aliegience between two people- eg., you and 'Mary Mother of God' - which is the mother of all religions- the universal church otherwise known as the Roman Catholic church. . .

It's a sign of obedience to the dicates and doctrines of the church. It's like at the crossroads between life and death you have to go through the catholic church and its version of 'God' in order to get to heaven or go to hell. They're like the seraphims . . .

It is called "making the sign of the cross". It has pagan origins and should be avoided.
A hail Mary is a prayer said to Mary. Although the words are based on scripture, it is a prayer said to a dead person, and as such is forbidden by scripture. Do not attempt to do this at home.

Texting lets you control the tone and establish what kind of conversation you want to have. Learn here https://tr.im/q3oea
This is probably the most important part. With texting, you can stop and think about what you want to say to your ex at each step of the way. Instead of reacting emotionally, you can take your time, figure out the right thing to say (I’ll give you most of it), and be strategic with your ex without saying something that you’ll regret.

I assume you are talking about people making the sign of the across upon themselves. Has no Scriptural support. A tradition - sometimes indicating a mark of respect/acknowledgment of God, or a request for protection or an ostentatious show of piety.
