Tonight, I was at the grocery store and I was standing in line about to be waited on when this guy walks up to where the baggers are usually located and tells the cashier that he wanted cigarettes. So, she tells him that she has a customer (me) and he completlely goes off. Yelling at her because "he saw that she had a customer and he wasnt asking her to let him go before the other customers". When 1) he was not in line and 2) if he wasnt asking her to go before me why did he tell her what he wanted. Why didnt he just wait until she was done with me? Or better yet get the hell in the line and then when its his turn tell her what he wanted? Correct me if I am wrong but I think its very rude to make demands of a cashier when they are waiting on or about to wait on another customer. If its not rude at the least its inconsiderate.

Agreed. This lady tried to do that to me one time. She walked up from the opposite side of the line and asked the cashier for a price check before she started ringing my stuff. The cashier gave her the price check and the lady decided she wanted the item and pulled out her wallet about to pay for it and I said "oh no I was here first". She tried to get the cashier to go along with it and when she wouldn't she went and got the manager and got that poor girl in trouble. Common courtesy is dead.

I think MathGoddess gets off on her holier than thou attitude by belittling people. :-) Anyways, the guy was an asshole, he should have waiting until the cashier was through with you to ask his question. She could have pointed him in the direction, but usually at grocery stores cigarettes are locked up in a case that an employee must unlock and get the cigarettes out for the customer, so I don't see what good it would have done him. What he should have done is get in line and wait, but he didn't and he acted like an inconsiderate jerk, so nothing you can do now.

Why didn't he wait?
Quite simply, he didn't want to.
The jerk probably behaves this way all the time.
Many cashiers and customers would feel intimidated by such rudeness and say nothing, so maybe he find his methods to be mostly successful.
If this is so, and he has behaved this way for a long time, then he may by now feel that it his personal right to have priority service.
Therefore, in his view, the cashier was wrong to call him on it.

I learned how to wait my turn in line when I was in Kindergarten. I guess some people have not learned this very important lesson. I am sorry that he was so rude and inconsiderate.. to you and the cashier. I am glad to see there are people like you who know the difference.

Of course it was wrong. Its beyond me why some people think that just because they are a customer, they can be rude to the workers. Just blow it off. He is the one that made a scene and most thought the same way you did.

The guy was a total jerk. People might be surprised at how many customers think they have a right to verbally abuse clerks. Many of the customers have a "me, me, me" attitude and a sense of entitlement.

The guy was a jerk - both in cutting in line (I don't doubt he saw you there, I'm sure he did) and in yelling at the clerk after she told him she had a customer and would help him in a minute.

he was a jerk - purebred one as well.

Dude was off his meds. If he didn't want waited on he should have kept his mouth shut. In grade school they'd have called him a cutter.
