If you are looking to generously support a veterinarian then get a Cocker \Spaniel. They are beautiful dogs but generally have ear, eye and weight problems. Get a Golden Retriever/

You have got a great attitude towards getting a dog but the best way to decide on a breed is to think about what you want out of your new companion and what you can handle time wise as well as attention. Pedigree has a great tool on their website to help you decide on what breed fits you best and the best thing you can do is go to your local shelter and adopt a dog. While adopted dogs may have issues, you will feel that nice feeling that you saved a dogs life from becoming dog food. If you are getting a dog, get him or her on a supplement to ensure you stay away from the vet office and he or she lives as long as possible, I recommend NuVet Plus. check it out at nuvet.com/54232
This stuff is amazing and it takes care of sooo much stuff.

the golden retreiver is the best i have ever had out of any of mannnnny breeds. she was the most loyal and protective dog. my two daughters could litterly roll the dog around on the floor or ride their backs and she would not do a thang to them but know let someone else come up to us and she would stand her ground with anyone or anything. she can from the pound and she had her brother there too. i brought her home and went back to get the brother and someone else had already gotten him and was trying to get the female i brought home. i couldn;t talk him out of the brother and he couldn;t talk me out of the sister. i had her for over 14 years and the best dog i have ever had. a total of 16 different and she is the best of any breed to me. if i had a chance to find another i would. i never buy any of my dogs i beleive in rescueing from the pound they make the best animals, i think just knowing they are wanted and going to a good home does something to them.

Like children? Then a Jack Russell would be the best. They are allot like kids. Read up on one first. That really goes for any dog that you may want. The more information you have on a breed the better choice you will make. Check one line for information on any breed.

Best breed of dog to keep??? haha... I think that I am likely the one being "kept" by my dogs! But as for your question:
Really, that depends on the individual person(s) and what kind of lifestyle they have and what they are looking for in a pet. I would contact a few reputable breeders as well as a veterinarian and ask questions re: their temperaments, genetic health issues and so on. It's better to be educated and make the right choice from the start!!

Best of luck to you!

It depends on you.
The three you mention, Lab.s, Goldens, and Setters,
are all field dogs, active affectionate, gentle, soft mouthed, and obedient.
Lab.s & Goldens are a bit smarter.
Goldens tend to drool more in hot weather.
Labradors are the easiest to groom.
Among the three individual pup differences might be greater than average breed differences.
Pick a pup you like.

If you are in MN, I would stay with the lab. Lab's are great water dogs, great and mellow pets and can be quite protective. They also have an undercoat to help with the cold and will shed nicely for the summer.

it depends on what you are looking for!For example, if you want a dog to watch your sheep, a Briard would be a good choice!

If you want a dog for bird hunting get a pointer or spaniel.

If you want a sled dog get a northern breed such as a husky.

if you want an apartment dog get a small companion dog.

the list goes on.
