I played a movie thru my laptop and hooked up the audio thru my receiver. This is an old receiver w/ 2 speakers. The sound is good when playing CDs, but the sound is lousy when playing the movie. It kind of cracks when I increase the volume. Do you know what I need to do to fix the audio problem? I really don't need perfect sound, but just want a lot cleaner audio.

Thx!

All audio gear has volume thresholds that cannot be passed. Your receiver has a pre-amplifier to boost any incoming signal up to a level that the amplifier can deal with. If you try to put too much signal through the pre-amp, the signal will overload it, and cause distortion.

So, your computer is too loud. You are overloading the receiver before it has the chance to amplify the sound. Turn down your computer, and turn up your receiver. This will send clean, undistorted signal to your amplifer, and you will win.

Try to Lower the volume on the PC side and let the receiver do all the amplification. Looks like your audio output from the PC may be too high, beyond the input limits of your receiver.

I would say try turning your computer volume to about 3/4 of the way up, then control the volume through the receiver.
