Homophobia is what fuels most of them.
Economically, the U.S. may be advanced, yet we are primitive when it comes to matters such as gay marriage.
As long as there are religious bigots like Fred Phelps, Gay marriage will be discouraged. In fact, only one state (Massachusetts) allows gay marriage. Just shows how much religion controls us.
Conservatives and religious bigots are one alike. We have to face it. We dont have a complete seperation of church and state. We dont do anything about it because religious bigots just so happen to hold high positions when it comes to politics.

The problem is that you are blinded to reality and truth. It may not be your fault that you are blinded but nonetheless, you are. If you would TRULY like some insight, please read on.
In this wonderful country of ours, we currently have (although it might be argued that it is slipping away) a republic form of government. This means that it is the individuals within the society that determine the laws through elected representatives. That being said, it is the individuals who decide what moral foundation the nation will try to uphold.
Now, I do not know any "religious wackos", as you put it, but I CAN tell you how the Christian view perceives gays and gay "marriage". God, through the Holy Bible, has made it abundantly clear that He abhors homosexuality. As such Christians, in a desire to please God and continue to be blessed by Him as a nation as a whole, seek to disallow those lifestyles and pursuits which displease God. God, after all, has shown the extent to which He is willing to punish a society for sexual perversions.
This, however, may still not make sense to you so I propose another respone. This respone will use the same line of reasoning or thought process you are using. I propose we remove all laws concerning theft from the books. After all, it's the "religious wackos" who put them there in the first place and don't we have "more important" things to worry about like murders and drug abuse than to worry about thieves. Thieves will also have to answer to God, won't they?
And while we are at it, why don't we remove the laws concerning incest, rape, and speeding.

Well, I have found people that are not Christians that disagree with homosexual marriage. I know several that have NO religious affliation that disagree with gay marriage, gays in general, gay rights, and gays in the military. So, it is not just the religious right. It doesn't hurt my future marriage to have someone that is gay to be married. That is their choice. I may not agree with it. I will be honest that I don't. But, it is NOT my right to tell someone else that their love isn't real or shouldn't be portrayed in a marriage. We say that this nation was built on Christian principles, but we allow atheists, pagans, agnostics, and many more to get married. I disagree with what they believe, but they certainly should be able to be married. The same is said for homosexuals.

you have won a lot of ignorant responses on your ignorant question. i think of maximum who oppose gay marriage are in basic terms classic people who could think of marriage is a union between a guy and a woman. That union has been on the middle of society for hundreds of years. i contemplate whether you help polygamy. in case you do no longer, does that make you a bible-thumper? in step with hazard the government might desire to get out of the marriage enterprise, and getting married might desire to be a be counted left to human beings and their God. If human beings choose for, they are able to style criminal civil partnerships, and can call it even in the event that they choose for. What many somewhat do in contrast to is whilst human beings of a state vote for outlining marriage as between one guy and one woman, and a decide or panel of judges rejects their will, making their very own perspectives the regulation. so a great way as abortion, a lot of human beings of religion have faith that human existence starts off at theory, and as such sense that terminating being pregnant is incredibly killing a man or woman. they think that human existence is the superb miracle in the universe, and that ending a guy or woman's existence is a grave be counted. they think that's never in basic terms a woman having a scientific technique equivalent to having a the tooth pulled.

I agree with you and you think they would be all for it since they are all into family "values."
I don't understand free will. What is the point of having it if we have to live under their theocracy? Like you said, if there is some bigot god up there, let them deal with it when the time comes.
Edit: What people don't understand is it has nothing to do with YOUR beliefs. If you think it is wrong, then don't do it. It is about the hundreds of rights that people refuse to give gay couples because they have a different way of living. Again it is not about right or wrong, it is about whether or not they have the right to make such decisions.
I don't see how this compares to rape?

thnose opposed to gay marriage often say traditional family values will be eroded if gays get to marry. My question is what traditional values do they want to maintain?
arranged marriages?
the high divorce rates?
the barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen standard?
the ownership of a wife as property?
the freedom to beat their kids?
the all to common acts of infidelity and adultery?
the stereotypes of women's work versus men's work?
and I could go on.
All those were part of traditional family values at one time or another and if those opposed to gay marriage are saying these shoud be brought back then I say it is time to ban those people from marrying and having families.

You don't have to listen to anyone if you don't want to. I'm a Bisexual Christian. It didn't stop me from making my choice to trust God.
If you want to get married then get married. The state might not recognize it, but why do you need them? If you want to have a husband or whatever, then do it. It doesn't ruin my day if you do or don't, I don't care. Why should you?
I as a Christian see all of this as a waste of time. My main focus is to bring the word of God through the Gospel to those who want to know God. Those who do not want to know God I am not even interested in.
So live! If you want to make an impact on politics, then vote and support the Gay lobby. Dwelling on something that you can't do is a waste of time. Live!

God has said homosexuality is an abomination. I believe that.
To adopt an abomination as normal or even acceptable behavior is to weaken the fabric of civil society by rejecting God.
Homo's are actively recruiting children into their demented way of life. That's really abominable.
To justify their ungodly lifestyle in any way is to abandon the truth. That would be insane.
Homo's want to make a whole truth out of their half lie. A half truth is a whole lie. There is no genetic proclivity toward homosexuality. It is a lifestyle choice; a choice in opposition to God and nature.

I agree with your logic
While were at it, we should legalize polygamy and incest between adults. Same logic.
Let's go after seat belt laws, prostitution laws, and the law against suicide. Those also are no-one's business but their own.
Let's stop treating those with mental illness that pose no threat to society. Doesn't affect us anyway.
Hey, let's stop religion from being banned from classrooms! No need to give in to those intolerant of religion in the schools.
Let's allow obsenity and nudity to exist freely in society. Banning those is simply a show of intolerance anyway. There's alot more people who are naturally naked than are naturally gay anyway.
You got something there. Let's go for the whole shootin' match!
As long as you think that it's only homophobics and religious nuts that oppose gay marriage, you're never going to understand the true opposition to the concept.

Some people just have to say black when everyone else is saying white. Or ... they have to say, NO!" when every one else is saying, "Yeah, sure! Whatever!"
Every gay couple who wants to get married should come up to Toronto for a little weekend vacation and get married! I invite you all! Oh, Canada! lol
