Well 1st of all. It's a Voluntary Service and they pick you, you don't just walk up& join The Legion. Second it's a 5 year hitch, they take your passport awayand the only way to get out is after your 5 years or desert.
I suggest you read some boks about life in the Legion. There's a coule of guys that wrote them. One's an EnglishGuy who was a former Brit Para, The other is a Canadian or American. The 1st book is called Life in the Legion.
If you are a US Citizen why not join the Servcie for the Country, that way if you die @ least it for something. France& you will be told this time& again in the Legion can give 2 craps whether you die for them or not.Viveire MonLegionaire

Most new French Foreign Legionnaires these days are grim Eastern Europeans. They want the pay, they want the food and they want a way out of whatever background they're from. And they really don't mind not having any free time to themselves or wordly possessions of sorts.
I suppose if you still really wanted to be a Legionnaire, it'd be a good idea to join the Marines first. Get some life experience. In FFL training, if an instructor wanted to hit you it'd be in his power to do so. If you don't learn French fast enough, or make an error, expect pain.
I wanted to be a lot of things a year ago... special forces, air force ground defence, navy clearance diver and French Foreign Legion. But after going through army recruit training, I decided that was more than enough stress for me.

Well first of all to the guy that said you have to be french to join the FFL your wrong. The FFL was started specifically for non french people because they were forbidden to join the French Army. ( hence the Foreign in FFL) dah!!!! If this is something that your really serious about they will take anybody that is willing to join as long as you pass the certain physical requirements that is expected for any military branch.

OK, so you're 14. It's a tough age, but think long and hard about any military service you join. You DON'T have to be French to join the FFL, but it's a serious commitment. The fact that you don't care about being killed is actually a detrement to you if you really want to join. They value human life and respect every kill they have to make. If you don't value your own life, you can't begin to value others' you understand? You can try American service, which would be a good start and prepare you somewhat for what to expect. Does your school have ROTC? Start there, and see how you like it before you make any binding contract. Good luck.

Why ask here, heres their web page in English....http://www.legion-recrute.com/en/.
Keep in mind this isnt a decision to take lightly. Or maybe it is, but once you sign the papers, you are in, and its a lot of HARD WORK, COMMITMENT, and adherence to a CODE OF HONOR which is taken very seriously. One other thing, they are barred from recruiting you while still here. To join, you will need to visit a recruiting station IN FRANCE. The embassy in Washington or any of the consulates will turn you away. Also you don't have to speak French to join, but you will pick it up fairly quick. However it'll give you a leg up that if your still in high school, why not take French Class?
