Use it consistently, say it sweetly, give a treat randomly when the cat comes to it's name, avoid using nicknames until it learns it's name. Sometimes the name you pick believe it or not will not appeal to the cat. If you're consistent with the above for a few weeks and it won't you may want to pick a different name. My cat decided he likes "Big Cat". The previous owner called him Frederico he ignored me if I called him by that name.

I trained my cat to come. Every time I was feeding her I would tap on the food can with a spoon a few times. When she came I let her lick the gravy off the spoon. Now she comes every time I tap the food can. Works even better than calling her name because its a unique sound that can be heard above others.

When you talk to your cat make sure you say their name often. I am always saying their name to them when I pet or feed them and they really do understand what your saying. I have 30 cats in my mission and they all respond well to their name.

Good luck

Generally it is you who respond to the cat by getting food, water, opening doors, etc. Cats speak subliminally so there is really no need for names.

It just takes time. Use his name often when you are with him, and he will eventually respond. My older cat, Bitty, will come running up to me whenever I say her name. But my younger kitten, Elliot, just looks at me when I say her name. It took a few months to even get her to look at me when I said her name.
