I have reason to believe I am getting an interview within my company for a completely different department. This is the job opportunity I've been waiting for for years. This is exactly what I went to school for! I've mentioned the possible interview to some co-workers and other higher ups. I know my boss appreciates the hard work I do for my department. (I'm in management) Bonus time is coming up in a month and it is at my boss's discretion as to the amount I get paid. I would love to use him as a referance, but I'm not sure what the right move is at this point. Advice anyone?

I've known that the company was going in this specific direction for a long time. ~5 years. This is the main reason I stayed so long. ( I've been with the company for 10) When it comes to interviewing, I don't think there is a policy on contacting your immediate supervisor beforehand.

Tell him exactly what you told us. That it is the job of your dreams. He will want to ride out this happy time with you, and I bet he gives you an even bigger bonus!

I have worked at many companies and at all of them you would have to tell your current manager about your intentions before even getting a final interview. Seems odd that you could get a new job in the same company without your current boss finding out.

If the interview is within the company, the hiring department would almost surely talk to your current boss, so you might as well tell him.

Good luck on getting the transfer - I hope it works out for you.

Hmm...I think it is SOP in my company to conduct interview discretely with a hiring manager. Former manager is not notified until the decision gets finalized. There is probably a good reason for that.

Having a good reference is worth more money than a bonus in my book. Don't let it about the money.

Be happy, but unless you have better evidence than wild suspicions I wouldn't get too happy or you will be disappointed and probably think bad thoughts.
