He's a medium sized Dalmation mix. Approx. 50-60ish lbs. One year and three months old. I have a feeling like I'm underfeeding him, but I'm not sure if he's just eating because the food is in from of him...

Is he skinny? What does the vet say? Do you give him a doggie multivitamin?

Dogs will eat as much food as you give them, so you're right--you can't trust his appetite as a guideline.

If he is too skinny, give him a quarter pound of 70% lean hamburger once a week, and he'll fill out to a sleek size without getting fat.

Some dogs are prone to overeating. We free feed our dogs, we always have food available, and they get enough exercise, so they don't overeat, and they are fit. Most dogs will eat until they are full, and stop. Most dog foods have feeding instructions. I don't believe that dalmations are prone to overeat. Try feeding him more and more and see if he'll stop even when there is still food in the bowl. Best bet is to read the feeding instructions on the bag (or can) of dog food.

You should feed your dog once a day .
feed your dog a large bowl and on the food packaging it should show a picture of a dog size. choose the largest.
feed your dog every day of the week except one day.
feed one day dry bits the next canned.
make sure food is low in purines and he gets fed fresh water daily.

What does your vet say? I would say that a cup of kibble twice a day should be adequate for him, but check with your vet and look at the back of the bag and see what their recommendation for feeding is. You don't want your dog to get too fat, and dogs will eat everything that is put in front of them even if they are full, so be careful!

I keep my dogs food and water bowl full .but he only eats when he is hungry. Some dogs will eat till they pop.
To be safe feed him once in the morning and once at night be sure to offer him healthy treats.
