Very high. There was a draft then, and we couldn't pinpoint certain targets like we do now.

It all depended on which branch of the military you were in and where you were stationed. The safest was the Navy (not including the swiftboats) as the North Vietnamese did not have a Navy. The Air Force was fairly safe unless you were shot down. The ground troops (army and marines) were the ones who suffered the most and took the heaviest casualities.
I did two deployments with the seabees but did not see any action.

In Vietnam there was a draft. This is because they didn't have enough soldiers. So basically there was a very high chance of seeing action. I had a grandfather in the war and went through hell. He was awarded two bronze stars and two purple hearts. Yet his brother was a really good running back during the war. He was stationed in Germany playing football the whole time while my grandfather was getting shot up. So I get if you were really good at football you didn't have to fight.

P.S Vietnam was not a necessary war.

i can't answer that. my brother in law was a crew chief on a slick and saw alot of action though his chopper did not have a gun for the most part. a good friend was with a unit where only 17 of all of them survived. Another friend of mine was in and out counselling because he killed the marines he went to rescue but the helo was hit and crashed on them.

another of my friends was there for 22 months and saw no action, met with the N. Viets as they drove in to occupy the south and was not harmed, though he and the commander told them they were in violation of the treaty. He said the VC commander replied in excellant english, "the war is over for you, please go home"

I was not there, I dont' know but like iraq, the war is everywhere

What was truly amazing was the life expectancy of an American soldier in Vietnam. I wish I still knew the exact figure.

If you were there, you saw it even if you never thought that you would. The NVA (North Vietnamese Army) attacked every where, even the soldiers that were journalists and thought they were safe sitting far away saw some action.

Then of course there are those that never saw any action because they were killed before they knew what even hit them.
