I'm just curious to know what other's think about this question. I find myself thinking about it a lot. and I can't help but wonder if people think need a "god figure" or supreme being merely to give their life meaning or to have somebody to blame when things aren't going right.

People have invented all deities to explain what they do not understand.. When science explains something the corresponding invented deity becomes obsolete..

Some people need a deity because they are afraid of going it alone.. The mere thought that they are not part of something bigger scares them.. Fear is a great driving force in the invention of deities..

The problem with your question is if there was no God would we even have the idea of a Supreme Being? If there was truly no creator to create how would there be a creation? One of the big questions the atheists cannot answer is where did the encoded information contained in the DNA molecule come from?

"What evidence is there that information, such as that in DNA, could ever assemble itself?

Codes are produced only by intelligence, not by natural processes or chance. A code is a set of rules for converting information from one useful form to another. Examples include Morse code and braille. Code makers must simultaneously understand at least two ways of representing information and then establish the rules for converting from one to the other and back again.

The genetic material that controls the physical processes of life is coded information. Also coded are complex and completely different functions: the transmission, translation, correction, and duplication systems, without which the genetic material would be useless, and life would cease. It seems most reasonable that the genetic code, the accompanying transmission, translation, correction, and duplication systems were produced simultaneously in each living organism by an extremely high intelligence.

Likewise, no natural process has ever been observed to produce a program. A program is a planned sequence of steps to accomplish some goal. Computer programs are common examples. Because programs require foresight, they are not produced by chance or natural processes. The information stored in the genetic material of all life is a complex program. Therefore, it appears that an unfathomable intelligence created these genetic programs.

Life contains matter, energy, and information. All isolated systems, including living organisms, have specific, but perishable, amounts of information. No isolated system has ever been shown to increase its information content significantly. Nor do natural processes increase information; they destroy it. Only outside intelligence can significantly increase the information content of an otherwise isolated system." -- Dr. Walt Brown PhD. MIT

"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments, and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance--that principle is contempt prior to investigation"--Herbert Spencer

When 'primative' people didn't have the benefit of 'sciences' to explain things like natural disaster, death, or even how the seasons changed, these things became the province of god. When a plague would sweep through a community killing some and not others---why did this happen? It was an easy answer to say that those that died had sinned against their god(s). Why does this 'joe smoo' have the authority to rule over this people--why cuz god says so--or that is at least what they priest of the god say.

You might also try reading Martin Luther's Treatise on Good Works, he outlines 4 different types of people and their relationships with the divine. Luther puts forth that some people actually do need god and religion, cuz with out them they wouldn't know that doing bad things were wrong. While others really don't need a religon nor a god, since they are a living embodiment of divine. Interesting read.

Yes, Voltaire, and you might add if God didn't exist it would be necessary to invent Him. As an atheist I often wonder if the world could function without the stability provided by religion. I also believe that the decline of honor and emphasis on ethics has gone hand in hand with organized religion. Though I personally hold myself to moral standards, I don't think that most people will do the same for themselves without religion. This is a very scary and depressing topic.

I gave this some thought--and you know what?---I think NOT believing in God is much easier than a belief in God. It would be so much easier to think that I don't have to be responsible for my actions to a Supreme Being. That is the easy way out---it takes guts to believe in God and to live up to those standards!!---I don't need God to give my life meaning because I have meaning in my life already! And I don't need someone to blame for the choices I have made for myself! A belief in God/Goddess goes so far beyond that---don't oversimplify----Blessings!

Well I think the answer is self evident. If thre isnt a god, then people did just invent one.... or perhaps several.

As for the why... humanity needs a conscience otherwise your neighbour could be your next meal.. or you theirs. That's a scary thought if you want one!

I think this forum is evidence of a faith in humanity.. not everyone believes in the same thing.. but there is a reasonable amount of fellowship despite the differences.

People have these things that people call minds and so they ask all kinds of questions which most of them call crazy and a few call profound like what am i and how did i get here and some make answers like bring me back a six pack and others say there must be something else and they instill it in the rest because they are obviously the more creative and so they too make these things called weapons which they kill their fellow man with if they don't agree that there is a ******* god, there is and you better agree or ill burn you alive and feed your remains to my poodle and so yeah. i was just feeling stupid.

People didn't really have a firm idea of God before Jesus Christ. So people had to believe in something and have faith: making up a god or various gods. But now we do know.

If there wasn't a God, people would invent one....probably, but we don't have to....since we exist, and that proves itself that there is God.

And not everyone blames God when things go wrong.
We don't always understand His grace and His plans for us, even if they sometimes seem wrong for us.

In the past it has proven true. I think that now we are growing more intelligent and more free thinking, and now that science is making significant finds as to the truth of the nature... perhaps if the idea of God were phased out people for the most part would become atheistic. I do think there would always be cults out there though.

I think people have turned material goods into a god of sorts... They follow the x-box god, tv god, money god, etc...

But... When things go WRONG, the x-box, tv or wallet don't get any of the blame... Instead, it goes to the real God.

Maybe if people actually followed the one true God, they wouldn't have to blame him so much, right?

And to really answer your question, I think everyone needs someone to look up to. We all have an emptiness somewhere in our lives, and when it all comes down to it, God is the only one who can fill in that void.

If there was no God, we couldn't invent one...Because we wouldn't be here. You can take that to the bank.
