My Florida driver's license is currently suspended. However, prior to moving there I had a California license. If I renew my license in California, will I be able to use that license to resume driving, or will that be automatically suspended as well?

More of a curiosity than anything. And for the record, my license was suspended by the family court, not the traffic court. My driving record is spotless, in case you're worried I'm a terrible maniac driver or something. ;)

Thanks to all that have replied. You confirmed what I suspected, but I figured it was worth looking into. And I have been making my payments, for those who brought it up. :) It's the lump past due amount caused by the support order not being instituted until my son was almost four (so almost four years of past support assessed on day one of the order) that caused the suspension of my license. It's slowly being paid off, but we're talking about several thousands of dollars. Not sure why I feel the need to defend my character here, but if I don't I come across as some dead beat dad, which I don't deserve. Anyway, thanks again for the prompt replies.

Who said I let him go four years without support? Don't be rediculous. It just wasn't court ordered. The order was initiated automatically when his mother applied for government health care just before his fourth birthday. If I wasn't upholding my end of the responsibilities in all that time, she would have applied for support herself well before that. Try not to be so judgmental, especially without the facts necessary to form an opinion. Anyway, thanks again to those who answered the actual question.

Your license was not suspended by either court. It was recommended by the court to the DMV which is run by the state. If you attempt or are able to renew a license in another state, while one license is under suspension, you could be eventually charged with perjury, which is a felony for supplying false information.

How would you get to school (school bus?) and work (friends? taxi?) if you couldn't afford a car? That's what you'll be doing for the next 30 days. the court probably won't grant you an exemption to drive to school or work with so many points in such a short time. (Many drivers don't accumulate that many points in a lifetime - It's not true that "the average 17-year-old in America usually gets a lot of tickets", only those who can't obey the laws do.) Remember, driving is an EARNED privilege, it's not a right. So far all you've earned is the privilege to not endanger others. When you're past your suspension, try obeying the laws - or you could be looking at a revocation before you're 18.

You will not be able to renew your California driver's license without having another valid license from another state. A suspended license is a suspended license.

I agree with zzz311. Catch up on your child support and get your driver's license back.

Everyone seems to be correct.

Driver's Licenses are State regulated. America doesn't issue a Federal Driver's License.

Most states (not all) have 'reciprocity of law' meaning shared information.

It is illegal to obtain a driver's license from a state in which you do not reside.

The Family Court has told you what you need to do to get your driving privileges back. You must abide by their decision and not try to 'get around it.'

When you renew you CA license, you will find that that is also suspended. Besides, it is illegal to have more than one state drivers license. All state DVM database now share info, so be smart, and don't drive until your suspension is lifted. You can go to jail for it.

When you apply for license renewal in California, it will ask you a question if you have a suspended license in any other state.

Driver's licenses are controlled at the state level, but all of the states cooperate by cross-checking each other's databases when you apply for a license.

Not a dead beat dad? Why did you allow your child to go 4 years without any financial support? Quit whinning about thousands of dollars you tried to skip out on until a CSED unit tracked you down.

Your license was suspended by the family court? So you're a deadbeat dad, maybe?

So much better than being a bad driver....riiiight....

Just pay your child support. Get a loan if you have to. These are children we're talking about. Problem solved.
