Though that passage about Peter being the "rock" is true, it's quite unclear that Peter was actually the "Bishop of Rome" at all. Some scholars hold that he was more likely the leader of the Christian Church in Antioch, though this too is hard to substantiate. The primary claim that Catholics believe in that Peter was the "Bishop of Rome" is very hard to prove and likely has more to do with later bishops of Rome wishing to assume preeminence over the Church and seeing the Peter claim as the best way to support themselves. The reality is that in the early Church The Bishops of Alexandria and of Antioch was as importance if not more important in guiding the overall direction of the Church.

Not being a christian, but a "disciple" of Jesus, and Peter, contrary to popular belief he founded the Roman Catholic Church "first," Peter did NOT for he founded the Eastern Orthodox Church in
Jerusalem during his lifetime. (Church of the East)

Of "truth" the doctrines are all written in "Aramaic" (the language of Jesus and the Apostles) NOT from the Hebrew and Greek, as is the Catholic church. THOUGH the Roman Catholic church lays claims to Peter being it's first POPE, he couldn't have been for there were no such TITLES in his day. The very first POPE of the Roman Catholic heirarchy was the Emperor CONSTANTINE. Recent discoveries have unearth the facts that within the first century a.d. there were NO christians except in amongst the greeks (for they though Jesus to be the messiah) and some faithful were called catholics by Ignatius at Antioch for he thought the faith to be "universal."

Christianity as it stands in the present world is a MAN MADE religion and has it's roots in the Roman Empire, NOT as disciples "Jesus." They USED him in their religion with a connection to the Jewish faith, of which also was not of the truthful doctrines of Jesus. Eternal life was never a doctrine of the Jewish faith, but of the EGYPTIAN ONE, and the God Jesus taught about as his "father" was "Amen" not "Adonai," the Jewish God. It is what got him "crucified."

Proof of "who" was the "father" Jesus spoke of can be read about in the Aramaic writings of the Apostles of Jesus. In English bibles AMEN was replaced with the phrase, "Verily, verily I say unto you."

Actually the priesthood, the authority that Jesus passed on to his apostles before his death was lost, the catholic church does not hold this power, and other christian faiths were all formed by protestors, hence the word protestants, but they were great people for realizing that the catholic church was distorting the doctrine of Jesus Christ, and as for mormons if you can believe that God called a prophet in these latter days by the name of Joseph Smith and recieved the priesthood, it is something very credible and very believable. and I guess to your answer it's not the christian church it would have to be the Catholic church, that is if you belive that St. Peter founded that church, which i believe he did not.

Jesus built his church on the truth that Peter preached.
That Jesus Christ is the son of God,the Messiah.
So any Church that preaches Jesus Christ
Born of a virgin
Son of God
Crucified
Resurrected
Coming again
Salvation in no other
Has built their Church on the truth.
Jesus is the Rock of our Salvation.<><

The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus, not Peter. Peter was to be temporary head of the Church along with his successors (the popes) until Jesus' return. John 21: 15-18: "Feed my lambs" "Tend my sheep" "Feed my sheep". These are the roles of a shepherd. We all know that Jesus is the "Good Shepherd", but he gave Peter a temporary shepherd's task while he was away. So Jesus founded the Church and Peter, along with his successors, watches over the it. Peace!

Jesus...
And you miss quoted, it is "on this rock"
Matthew 16:18
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it

And I don't know how anyone can think Peter founded the Catholic church since it didn't come into existance until 300 years later.
Peter's church was primarily Jewish in its make up.
Paul was the ambasitor to the Gentiles.

1: the church as a whole was not founded on Peter, that is an improper reading of the section.

2: The church was founded on Peter's answer to Jesus' question "Who do you say I am?" Peter responded, "You are the Son of the Living God, the Christ." Jesus answered, very good, and you are Peter (now changing his name from Simon-Peter) and on this rock (confession of Jesus as teh Christ) I shall build my church.

3: Catholics claimed Peter as their founder in 400A.D. Before that there is no record of the Papal authority.

4: Mormonism was established in the 1800s by Joseph Smith, a con-man and felon. He started the church to aid his cash flow problems.

5: Assembly of God is another name for Pentacostals. They, like Baptists, methodists, and Lutherans, get their beliefs from reading the Bible. How they interpret the scriptures to mean what they claim, is anyone's guess.

In the book of Acts, Peter shows himself to be the first evangelist leading people to Christ. However, Jesus says, "...on this rock I will build my church..." Jesus founded the church. Peter was the vessel that led it.
