Aviation Navigators?

Question

Can some please tell me more about the role and duty of Air Force or Naval avaition Navgiators. Are they prestigous and very competitive jobs that lead to promotions or no? Also, can it be a stepping stone to re apply for flight if you dont get it the first time? But most importantly is it a fun, rewarding job that has a counterpart in the civilian world?

The need for navigators is decreasing all the time.
Years ago, aircraft needed a navigator, but with computers and the global positioning satellites, the need for navigators has dropped to almost zero.This is both in the military and in commercial aviation.
