The AYH hostel in Man. is very safe but take a cab back late at night don't walk. Big Apple is safe as well but not as secure has a more NYC vibe

hostels are not as big here as they are in europe. so not exactly sure how safe they are. but you may want to try the ymca..they rent rooms (shared bath) for cheap.
if you already have a specific hostel in mind...go to www.tripadvisor.com, type in the name of the hostel and they will give you reviews from people who have stayed there.
