Someone called Jesus "Good Master"

and Jesus said:

Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

Why is this significant?

Its significant because Jesus is saying his Not God. Jesus prayed repeatedly—when with his apostles in an upper room in Jerusalem and even more fervently in the garden of Gethsemane. (Matthew 26:36-44; John 17:1-26; Hebrews 5:7) When suffering, he did not revile those who taunted him. Instead, he prayed in behalf of those who were acting in ignorance: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34) He kept his mind focused on his Father, “committing himself to the one who judges righteously.”
A necessary part of truly believing in Jesus involves worshiping the God that Jesus himself worships. Jesus prayed: “This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.”—John 17:3.

Another way of looking at it is that obviously Jesus is good. Since he is good, and he declares "there is none good but one, that is, God," then the answer to his question logically leads one to say that Jesus is God.

...yet Jesus says there is none good but one, that is, God. This is in keeping with that fact that God is one. Yet we have the Father is God, and Jesus is God. Taken together with the Holy Spirit is God, this leads us to the concept of the trinity.

This is an important point, and is mentioned in three of the gospels. Note that Jesus said, why do you call me good? He did not say "I am not good." Note further we can pick just about anyone in the Bible and say for instance David or Moses was not good because of their transgressions. However, none of us can say that Jesus is not good. Spiritually, it just would not make any sense. Therefore the only conclusion we can reach, is that Jesus is God.

He was using the term "good" as if it were relative. Jesus correctly says only One is good. Jesus made a point about how we flippantly use the word good referring to what pleases us rather than God. Jesus is the good One. It isn't the style of teaching that is good, but the teacher Himself, God, the One in whom we live and move and have our being. Jesus is God.

It's significant because Jesus was 1) reminding the person that they were a sinner who needed a Savior & 2) getting them to realize that since Jesus was not a sinner and WAS good that He was God.

Unlike John, Matthew doesn't focus his gospel on the divinity of Jesus, but that he is the Messiah who fulfills prophecy.

Actually it says, "And behold, one came to him and said, Teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?"

He is asking what he can do that is good in order go to heaven.
Then the next verse, "And he said unto him, Why askest thou me concerning that which is good? One there is who is good: but if thou wouldest enter into life, keep the commandments."

He is saying in this verse that there is only one who is good and that's God. You made it sound differently then it appears.

It is significant because he saw Himself as a servant..He was one of us and none of us is good. It is only the works that God does in us that are good. That's why we look "good" but it is ALL God who works thrus you and me.
