we have owned shelties for a very long time. also if you want to learn more thers 2 yahoo groups you can join that help. one is sheltie_world. and another is SheltieEchoes. both can help you understand the pro's and con's on shelties. pro's are they are beautiful dogs, and extreamly smart. but they are also herding dogs, meaning they bark. a Lot. but you can also train them not to bark! they do learn fast, but they shed constantly. but they are extreamly loyal. though tend to shy away from strangers because of there instincts. they shy away until they know someone because back when they were first being used and sheep dogs. they didnt want anyone to steal them... so it works. some shelties are a little To skitish. if you dont find a decent breeder. you can end up with a very timid shy dog. but just liek with any breed research is needed. you can email me anytime with questions about these guys. if i cant answer them, i have friends who can. my emails' kitdragon2000@yahoo.com Good Luck!

I rescued my Sheltie 6yrs ago. He was very hipper at first and has clamed down quite a lot. Hes beautiful and very smart. Does get upset when I leave the house. Right now he has a few health problems. He's had hypertesion & protein in his urine, which has been stablized but he now has edema...Its very up setting because the vet doesn't know why its happening. I feel that he is so young to be having these problems.

Beautiful, smart, sweet, completely loyal, agile and neurotic at times. They really can be terrible barkers. I have had a Sheltie for 9 years now. I love her to death, but I am not sure I would get another. It took her a loooong time to calm down. Even now she can get on my nerves having to be as close to me as she can be at all times. As I am typing here, she just laid down under the desk chair and it is going to be difficult to get up without clunking her in the head!

My in laws have them and they bark ALL the time. Not a fan of Shelties. They are beautiful, though.

They are sheepdogs.
Intelligent, active, and need a lot of exercise & attention or they get bored nervous and mettlesome.
Good with kids, not good if left alone a lot or for long periods.
