Once out of the military you are no long a consideration of the military and fall under the Veterans Administration. Which is under funded and full of people trying to keep the status Que happy by keeping prices down.
As recent events with Walter Reed, Which is supposed to be the best VA hospital in the country.
Wonder how many people are awarer of the physical problems that at not being reported that have shown up from Desert Storm, and You think Vietnam caused a lot of mental problems for the Vets, you have not seen anything yet.
With the double and triple deployments happening now in Iraq.
You may ask how do I know this, well I am a Combat disabled Vietnam Vet, who gets information every 3 mo. from the VA on Agent Orange as well as other chemical problems that are showing up.
Why I feel NO person should be allowed to be president of the United States without having served time in the Military under "Active Duty Status"
They are going to be the Commander in Chief of all the Armed Forces!!!
Along with my Purple Heart license plate, my USMC veteran sticker,
I have another one that sums it up pretty plain in my book.
"FOR THOSE WHO FOUGHT FOR IT.
FREEDOM HAS A FLAVOR THE PROTECTED
WILL NEVER KNOW'
Edit:
Other branches of the sevice my be just people but with the USMC you are BROTHERS you take care of each other.
My experance with the VA has been both good and bad, I have had things done right and had a operation that was screwed up. A lot of the VA doctors are INTERNS from near by civilian hospitals. IF the VA is so important to all the military veterans why are they closing some and telling the vets to get here as best you can!!!! Real funny thing is most people think Democrate are the hardest of the Military, but Carter right before leaving office signed a bill that helped Vets out more than any other president has.
Another little tid bit not many are awaree of, there where more death by there own hands after Vietnam than are listed on the Vietnam memorial, also Veterans make up the biggest percentage of HOMELESS people.

I can tell you why , people keep joining they don't go to a V A hospital and see what care they will get if they need it are get shot , like I did , I know they said they would take care of me, I planed on staying in the military , but my wounds put me out , they did not have V A police then , now I know why they have them because US veterans where just being told to screw off , bad doctors every where dirty hospitals and doctors that cant get a job in other hospitals , what doctor wants to work at the v a now I am older and if I ask for somting its like I am bitching, have blood clots in my legs gastritis in my stomach from being shot in the stomach , give me the wrong medicine that doesn't go with another medicine, only way to find out is go see a doctor on the out side , I have been given the wrong medicine so many times and do they care no , if it was there family, ohhh that would be different they would get the best , I am getting old now, I hope that anyone that's thinking about the military , goes and sees what treatment they might get at a V A hospital , I think if they did a lot more would not join !!! they lost my records in the army , try to prove some injury that you got and don't have records !!! happened to me !! so please go to a V A hospital and look and ask about the care and then go find a job doing any thing but the military !!! now that should answer these stupid answers about veterans are like an old car , love people that don't care, smart and rich people don't care !!!!

Actually I came back messed up physically and Uncle Sam took better care of me than your beloved society. There are a bunch of paper pushers that sit and make determinations as to how much compensation a wounded or injured soldier gets when they get out. Not actual soldiers. If that was the case Veterans would have no trouble getting the help they need. Its people like yourself that sit in those offices and screw Vets over. As far as the military using people, the Army, Navy, etc. is nothing but a word. The actual military is made up of people (you probably didnt know that). Without people there is no military. If you arent willing to let people use you while you are a civilian, guess what? The military wont use you either. Because it just a bunch of people.

Same reason that the entire Dept. of Defense treats both military and civilian personnel like trash when they are hurt on the job?
Blame the profiteers and their puppet politicians.
They closed the closest V.A. hospital to me, so if I want treatment at one I now have to make a 300 mile round trip instead of the 120 miler I used to do,

got any specific examples? I have no complaints about my treatment from the VA. As others pointed out to you, it's the VA not the military that cares for Vets. Are you a vet?

You just hurt alot of us with your baseless question. Dont pretend to support us, everything you say is based off the fact that you hate bush.
Most military personel are happy with what we get because we signed papers in the beginning entailing what we get. What we are not happy with is a public of whom a large percentage bashes our mission and pretends to support us.
I have alot of injured buddies, some discharged, some didnt. They all got what was promised to them and are being taken care of.

JG T, veterans are junk cars? If I ever meet you I might beat the crap out of you. I hope if thats not what you meant you'll have the decency to edit your answer, clarify what you meant, and apologize.

Your blaming the wrong department the Department of Veterans Affairs is in charge of taking care of our veterans. Its really not the DODs fault. If these young vets knew what was waiting for them after their discharge I bet they would really reconsider their enlistment.

Why don't you get off you lazy wolf @$$ and do something about it besides type on a keyboard. Nothing is stopping you from helping out at the VA or doing things for veterans.

I can only hope that people consider your question when determining whether or not they want this same bureaucracy running our entire health care system.
