You can't punish him if you don't catch him in the act. I say this nicely but it is your fault if he goes in the house! Since he is obviously not housebroken yet, crate him when you can't be there to watch him. You need to take him outside--and go with him--and wait for him to go. Praise him when he does so he knows why he is outside. If he goes in the house and you don't catch it, just clean it up and ignore it. Dogs do NOT understand delayed punishment.

If you catch him peeing tell him NO, go out! Take him outside wait until he pees and tell him he is a good boy and bring him right back in. Don't let him out to play he will forget why you brought him out there in the first place. If he doens't pee when you take him out after so long, take him back in and wait a little and try again. How old of a dog is it? If it is a older dog you may want to just take a urine specimen in and make sure he doesn't have any infection. They will pee in the house if they have an infection.

Dog's have a pretty short term memory when it comes to the now. Like say your dog goes potty in the house and you didn't catch him right in the middle of the act, and you go to punish him/her, they do not realize why they are in trouble, never rub the nose in it, again they don't understand what you are doing at that moment in time. What you are doing is good, but make sure you are letting him out when he needs to go, not just because you wasn't paying attention and he mad a mess in the house..

There are a million ways to do it, but DO NOT PUNISH. You'll make it worse.
Google this topic and read some articles on how to solve the problem, but do not punish. If you do, you'll have a dog doing it in the house somewhere where you cannot see because the dog will think he is punished for doing it in the open.

Okay, I just went through the situation in a dog obedience class. You need to hold the collar and point at the puddle and tell the dog NO in a firm voice multiple times. Then go ahead and put him outside for a little bit to empty the bladder if somethings in there. Dogs live in real time, not past or future - and do not remember what they've done wrong even 10 seconds later. POINT TO IT AND SCOLD - PUT OUTSIDE.

When you let your pup "outside", stay with him and make sure that he pees or #2s. This way, you can often prevent any accidents in next hour or two.

Unless caught in the act, your dog will not realize he has done something wrong. Just clean it up and forget about it, because your dog already has.
