I'm doing research for a book and just want to find out a few things and you wouldn't believe how hard it is to find exactly what I'm looking for.
Which units are fighting in the middle of a war and what is the leader of each unit called?
What are the conditions of a discharge and how long would it be for a person to be transferred back home?
what guns do they use?
And other equipment that they carry?
Thanks to everone who replies

I'm not asking for specific names, I'm asking if the leaders are called a captain or commander because I don't know. This whole army thing is only appearing in the book for about a page, so I just want to get a few facts right. So there is no need to get sarcastic okay.

US ranks are similar to British Army ones with some differences ,as here you have 2 different Lieutenant ranks ,then Captain ,Major ,Lt. Colonel ,Colonel and then the Generals - US have stars for Generals , e.g. 1 star ,2 star etc..
As for units ,platoons are usually let by Sgts ,companies by Lts and ultimately Cpts.
Guns vary depending on the type of trooper - basic troop will have M16 semiato rifle in 5.56mm (0.223 calibre) and sometimes the Colt 0.45 calibre automatic pistol. There will be heavier weapons employed in each squad e.g. Stoner or SAW LMG and/or M60 LMG.Of course this varies if the troop is Spec Forces Tier 1 e.g. Navy SEAL or Delta Force where often personal weapons of choice are employed (watch Black Hawk Down to see Delta Force in action) ,Tier 2 e.g. Green Beret ,Marine Recon etc. have a little less flexibility in weapons choices than T1 but more than regular US Forces.
Equipment again varies dependant on :-
1. type of troop
2.theatre of operations ,etc.
but often include a combat knife of some description ,rations ,canteen, webbing and body armour.
Special kit can include NVG (night vision goggles) ,laser sighting for targeting ,team radios and satcom gear (when they REMEMBER to bring it - read Bloody Heroes by Damien Lewis ,it`s set just after 9/11 in the `Stan ,Afghanistan)
The rest is classified LOL

Clearly, this is going to be a pretty pitiful book. If you don't know at least some of this without resorting to Y!A, maybe you should think about another topic. At the very least, you could TRY to do some research on your own. But, being a kind person, I will answer your questions.
1. The units that are fighting in the middle of a war are the Extra-Special noogie brigades, led by officers with the rank of Corporal-Captain.
2. You get discharged if you kill as many people as you weigh in pounds. If you weigh 175 pounds, when you kill 175 people, they will send you home in about 3 days.
3. The guns they use are the Atomic Napalm Neutralizer, and the Death Ray Zorcher.
4. Other equipment they carry is a full set of gold plated golf clubs, and super top secret X-Ray specs.
Hope this info helps.

I got taught all about this in school today. I can't remember the exact figures but the EU has more men and of course the British, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Estonian, and other EU countries' armies are very developed and some of the best in the world. The only country that could outrank them individually is the US, but as the EU the Europeans I think are slightly stronger. The EU hasn't got it's own army however, and if the US and EU went to war I think at the moment the US would win because the EU armies aren't under a central command and they'd be less organised and effective in a war. However if the EU managed to successfully unite and fall under a central command the EU would win a war against the US. Obviously this is unlikely to ever happen since the US and Europe are in NATO together and are very strong allies against other enemies. So overall, the US Army could win a war against any country in the world, but a united EU might just be able to win. And I'm British btw.

The unit is always in the control of a Commander - your other questions are not what I would be ready to answer, since I don't know if your truly asking for innocent reasons!

Um, it sounded like you were asking for the specific unit designations and for the leaders' names. Dont do that, and NOBODY ANSWER THIS GUY. Not that most of you would know anyway.
However, If you just want a breakdown of military unit structure then globalsecurity.org has some good explainations.

I do not think Yahoo Answers is the proper forum for this type of question. I think that some of these answers could quite seriously jeopardise national security. I would go to the Library or someplace else to find your answers.

Units that are fighting in the "middle" of a war are called "surrounded", and their leader can vary depending on it's size and casualties; generally they would be "the commanding officers".
Many units dont' have guns at all. Tanks do, as do artillery, but infantry units have rifles, not guns.
Other equipment besides weaponry includes socks, food, maps, first aid kits, and communication gear.

The leader of each unit is the highest ranking soldier in the unit. So like colonel or sergent blah blah blah. soldiers get discharged when injured or they are in iraq long enough ( i dont know the exact duration). I think that soldiers use M4's but im not too sure. The equipment they carry is usually survival gear, flashbangs, grenades, extra ammo, and a side arm.
