It's the underware.
PS: Just joking. I don't have anything bad to say about Mormons.

Quite simply, it's because of three things.
One, your religion is based on revelation. This means that your religion is based on trusting what Joseph Smith and the other Prophets say is true, no matter how crazy it sounds. True or not, those golden plates are a source of contention because no one but those that started your religion get to see them.
Second, polygamy. That's a historical reality that just won't go away. Many people consider that part of your history to be perverse. Sorry, that's just how it's looked on. And the fact the ok to live polygamous lives came, once again, from a revelation? Most don't buy it.
Third, the missionaries. People these days don't want to be bothered with missionaries. They don't like people walking up to their doors uninvited. It's tough going for missionaries in this cultural climate.
These are the things that make your religion stand out. Is it right for folks to make fun of you? Of course not! They're idiots. Ignore them.
Many Blessings,
Lilyth

Because your church is guilty of Murder
It was September 11, 1857. A wagon train of 160 settlers on their way to California was massacred by a bunch of Mormons dressed in Indian clothes. 17 children under the age of 8 were spared and lived to tell their story.
1st. They dressed as Indians but after five days they changed tactics.
2nd. Then they went a bit away ,dressed back into normal clothes and acted like the Rescue Party who had negotiated a deal with the"Indians".
3rd, Then confiscated all the guns as part of the deal for "saving" the travellers and Mormon dissidents( who were the reason for the attack in the first place).
4th. Took everybody off a mile or so and shot them all. 2 men got away but were eventually tracked down and killed a day or so later.
5th. Took the 17 children they had not killed back with them to Salt Lake City.
6th. Got away with it. After a publicized trial, with the childrens own testimony admitted into the court, only 1 man was convicted and shot, John D. Lee. ( pardoned by Church 1960) The church even protected over 100 other killers involved in this massacre from Federal prosecution thus making themselves accessories after the fact. Then they say "Thou Shalt Not Kill " doesn't apply to them . Only everyone else.
It ended up being called the Mountain Meadows Massacre. The first time in U.S. history that U.S. citizens were massacred on U.S. soil by religious wackos. This event is even more significant because the total U.S. population at the time was much smaller.(I dont know the exact numbers, maybe only 30 million or so) In todays numbers it would be around 1400 dead.

Because the Mormon faith differs from standard Christianity more than Gnostics do and the Catholics started the first inquisition to kill the Gnostics off. The revelation of your founder is the weirdest kind of interpretation of God that the human mind has ever arrived at. There are worse religions to join. Still it harms no one so enjoy it if it's what you like. Perhaps in your next incarnation you'll have better opportunities.

I think many people make fun of the Mormons because some of the beliefs of the Mormons are so similar to the Masonic Lodge (which in fact Joseph Smith had been kicked out of the Masonic Lodge), or perhaps because the Mormons want people to believe that they are Christian, whinc in fact they are not. Christians do not believe that we will one day become Gods of our own planets, nor that "As man is God once was, as God is man can become." Which is a teaching of Joseph Smith. Also the "Golden Tablets" I mean get real, there are copies of the Bible that survived for many thousand years on Papyrus and he expects eople to believe that these supposed tablets were taken away after he translated them. It is also noteworthy that he translated them into Elizabethan English when that language was not in common usage. And the fact that Mr. Smith believes that God is fallible but the Bible teaches that God is not able to make mistakes In short the Mormons are made fun of because they open themselves up to it, I mean really a 20 year old on a Bicycle calling himself "Elder" who are you trying to fool. My spurs are older than 20 years old.

The reason your religion is made fun of I think is because people are really ignorant about it. When they hear the word Mormon they think of all the negative extreme cases involving polygamy and young children being married off. These things happen, but not in mainstream mormonism. its easy to make fun of something you know very little about. Don't let them get to you. Stand up for your beliefs, and when people are being ignorant let them know it!

Anytime something is different, you can expect for some comments that are rude to happen. Remember how different Jesus' teachings were to the people in the biblical days. They laughed at Him and Mock him and even crucified Him!
Hey its not really just your religion. Its all religions! Just think about it:
Baptist: "Once Saved Always Saved" or "Watch Out We will Drown You"
Methodist: "It is sprinkling, lets go outside and be baptized"
Jehovah Witness: Who is Jesus?
We could go on and on. But listen: Don't sweat the small stuff and just hang in there!
Hey I'm not a Mormon but I understand how you feel!

Why? Because Joseph Smith was merely the L. Ron Hubbard of the 19th century, and Mormonism the Scientology of the 19th century..
He just took an already wacky religion, and added his own spin to make it even more wacky.

It is not your religion that is made fun of. It is the lack of understanding of your faith that confuses non-Mormons. And when an unenlightened non-Mormon is confused, he/she makes fun of what they don't understand in order to satisfy their own shortcomings.
I have no conflict with anyone who has a belief. It is those with no beliefs that I truly feel sad for.

According to Joseph Smith, when he was first visited by an angel he was told that eventually "his name would be had for good and evil among all nations" This was apparently a prophesy fulfilled according to all the posts I have seen on Joseph Smith just on Yahoo answers alone, let alone all the other commentaries out there.
To answer your question, since you belong to the church Joseph set up you get the same treatment....either good or evil. Let the Holy Spirit guide you.
