Is it hard to get a job as a mechanic w/o a degree nowadays like everything else?

Ill be 18, high school graduate, w/ about 25 credits and a little job experience towards working on cars; would that be enough to get a mechanic job in New Mexico or should I finish the associates degree?

As one of the others mentioned an automotive school is a great start to get your general knowledge, but keep in mind that if your going to work for a dealership, they all have individual training for the different models. Don’t think you have to start out in a dealership to move up. I started out part time changing oil and doing brake jobs at a small shop while attending automotive school. After graduation I took a job as a technician with Ford(changing oil, tires, brakes). After about a year I moved up to service advisor. Its been 5 yrs since i graduated and I am now ASE certified, Ford Hybrid Certified, Ford Technician Certified, And Master Certified as a Service Advisor.

My advise would be to start off as I did and work at a jiffy lube or other oil change place learning all you can. then move into a dealership of your choice doing the same. being a "general mechanic" is almost impossible these days with the different technology they are putting into vehicles these days. then work your way up. once you learn a particular manufacturer and doing it in repetition you will get faster and faster and make more money. I hope this helps you. if you have anymore questions email me and ill do my best to help.

Auto mechanics is complicated today, and will get more so as time passes.
If you can manage it get the degree. You'll need it, and it will help you prepare for staying on top of a changing field.

There are numerous tech schools around the country, a bit pricey but will help with placement (dealerships and such). You can even get financial aid for these programs.
