The ancient church believed that the wicked are punished in the afterlife, but that they will be provided an opportunity to repent at the end of time. Hell, yes, but not eternal hell.

If you think hell is funny, think again. Hell is not man's final destination. It's in the Lake of Fire and Brimstone.
Think of it this way, Imagine yourself in a place where No Love, No Peace, No Happiness, No God to Save you, will be your final dwelling.
Forget the word Hellfire for now. Think about eternal damnation into a dark, scarry void where the feeling of depression and sadness, worst of all, bitter torment, will be amplified there 100times more than what you nor I nor everyone is or would feel right now.
Read Revelation 20: verses 10 15
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

God is a God of infinite justice, as I am sure you are aware, there have been many, many wicked people who have lived on the face of this earth, not only serial killers, but people like Hitler, Ben-Laden, John Wayne Gacy, etc; if there was no punishment for them, where would justice be for their victims and their victims families?
Try to focus on your own spirituality; pray, pour your heart and your troubles out before God, spend about 20 min. each day or so reading your Bible, the Psalms is a good place to start and think upon some good parables and your own spiritual well being, realize and trust that God causes all things to work together for the good of those who love Him; it's very possible God is drawing you to Him:
"Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day." - John 6:43,44.

I personally believe that there is a Heaven. however, Hell doesn't always have to mean "burning fire on your soul for all eternity because of your sins!"
Hell, I think, is the one place where God isn't. Hell doesn't have God's presence....and to me...that's the worst torture. God's love is absent...
However, in your case...."Where would all of serial killers, etc. go? If they haven't repented..." My first answer to you would be....Purgatory. If you're not familiar with Purgatory, it's the place where people who haven't repented for Jesus Christ go and rest until they have repented to go into Heaven.
My second answer...which doesn't apply to your answer...would be Hell. In my opinion, I think ANYONE who kills someone doesn't deserve to go to Heaven. But what do I know? I'm only starting to understand the concepts of God.
I hope you find the answer you're looking for.

Lots of people don't believe in hell. I don't. How much damage could you do in one lifetime, even if you were a mass murderer, that you deserved ETERNAL punishment? And especially for just not believing in someone else's idea of God. It doesn't seem reasonable to me, so I don't believe it.
(Of course to be fair I was raised not believing in hell).
I think people should not believe things because someone else tells them they're supposed to believe it. I think a person should keep an open mind, read a little, and decide what seems reasonable and believable for him. That's what I do. In the end, nobody really knows any more about this stuff than anyone else!

All Christians do not believe in the concept of Hell. Some believe that Hell or the second death is just that, death. Separation from God for eternity.

Your belief is not important. Only the truth is important.
You could believe the world is flat, that does not make it so.
Read, study, pray, start with the Book of John maybe. But by all means, quit worrying about your beliefs.
You need to discover the truth. The truth that will set you free.

Well, you don't have to know anything about Hell to be a Christian. Jesus stated how to be a Christian:
John 3
17 "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son."
If you do not believe in Hell, then you have to consider what it is that you are being separated from the rest of the world for. What is God's wrath going to do to people?
But as I said, you don't need to know anything about Hell to be saved. The focus is on Jesus, and through Him we gain peace with God.

Hell is defined as eternal separation from God. That separation from God is described as fire.
