I can not seem to find current, real, images of the situation and the state of the progress in the severely damaged areas. I would like to see a map also giving me an idea of the extent of the damage.

the google maps are outdated (the one of my home is at least 3 years old--very pre katrina!) Its cool imagry, but not accurate.

www.nola.com USED to have live streaming web cams in various parts of the city, not sure if they still do.
U can also try our local news affliates, they may have webcams

Best source: Google

I especially suggest Google Map, where you can view a satellite image of New Orleans, down to specific streets.

Nola.com has some cams of the Quarter. It doesn't show residences but rather tourist flow. And has links to lots of other info.
