A couple had sex before marriage, but didn't tell the bishop and was sealed in the temple anyways.

If they decided to tell their current bishop a couple of years into the marriage, and they have callings and are very active... what would happen?

Would they be disfellowshipped? Or excommunicated? What would the consequences be?

I'm Mormon, just fyi, but I'm just curious, as I've recently been learning reasons for why people get dis'd and ex'd

Basically it was okay for Joseph Smith to have a fling or two under his 'secret revelation of unmentionable joy', but for a married couple to have sex before they were married is an abomination? Do you know how many people lie their as$ off to the bishop just to have the upper tier of membership card?

If you don't think this ever occurs, refer to the question about being naive.

I honestly don't know what would happen, I think it would be up to the bishop. They might at least be put on probation, whatever that entails, but I've heard of it happening.

When my dad was a stake pres. he told me of an old old couple that finally confessed- for them he said that they had suffered enough with the guilt and told them they were forginen. But I think that was a rare case- i think generally there are severe consequences

I know someone that actually happened to. Their Bishop said that because they had married and had not repeated the "mistake," by engaging in that behavior with multiple partners, they were forgiven.
