What I mean is. What do you think goes on in the average consumers mind when they're looking for a "sweet" wine. I know which wines are sweet for the most part.

When consumers are looking for a sweet wine, they are looking for something fruity and flavorful. They don't really want a red wine because the flavors can be overpowering. With a white wine, they can be a little on the dry side. I used to give samples of a good red and a good white and people would turn down both and ask for a blush because it's sweeter. Zinfandel and Riesling are high in the category of sweetness... especially to people who don't really drink wine.

I usually think gewurztraminer, riesling, port, ice wine. These you can still match with food for a good flavor combo. I don't usually seek out sweet wines as I prefer more bold astringent flavors. But I never even think of White Zin. To me that is kool aid.

mostly they are looking for a sweeter wine, not a port or dessert wine. i usually offer a taste of white zinfandel, and riesling, to see , if that would meet their criteria of "sweet". sometimes i suggest a kir, made with white wine & chambord, or creme de cassis. it may be that they are not wine drinkers, just trying to get started with something a little fruitier.
