I am not an atheist, but i see the point you're making. Terrible things have been done by people on both sides. Religious people certainly can't cast the first stone.

You equivocated your question. As you should know, there is a difference between an atheist doing bad, and doing bad in the name of atheism. Then you confuse the matter even more by introducing the qualifiers "famous" and "legal trouble." If i didn't know better, i'd think you were trying to prove a point about your "religion."
To answer your equivocations, i cannot name anyone, famous or otherwise, who has misbehaved in the name of atheism. (To any theists who object, consider that Hitler, Stalin, and Sadaam Hussein all had mustaches. Does that mean that people with mustaches are bad?) As for legal trouble, i do know of some atheists who have been *accused* of wrongdoing because of their atheism, but the charges were based on the bigotry of the accusers, never on any wrongdoing on the part of the atheists.
To answer your title question:
- Jeffrey Weise, the schoolkid who shot up Red Lake, Minnesota.
- Any of the Tamil Tigers.
- Me. Sorry, no details (although i will admit to a well-deserved speeding ticket before i became an atheist).

For some reason your question raised a question in my mind. Thanks for letting me take the segue in advance. I see names of supposed Atheists many times from Christian answerers. I wonder if someone is raised without knowledge of the Christian concept of a God, that person could not be an Atheist.
In their ongoing egoism Christians seem to take for granted that every human being has heard of their God with no name. They also take for granted that never are other Gods worshiped around the world.
That is a rather sick and self serving attitude.
A Segue: All of the Communists just changed Gods. It doesn't matter what God is accepted as long as the person accepts it as a God they are NOT Atheists.
JC and all who thought he hit the spot for God. Dahmer was born into a family of devout members of the Stone-Campbell denomination known as the "church of Christ" or "Churches of Christ." He was an active churchgoer until the age of 5. After that, Dahmer was never again actively religious or a regular churchgoer until after his arrest and imprisonment. After being imprisoned for his crimes, Dahmer sought out the church of his childhood and petitioned to be re-baptized in the Church of Christ. This caused some controversy, but he persisted until he was able receive this rite, which he was apparently sincere in requesting. Shortly after being re-baptized into the Church of Christ, Dahmer was murdered by his cellmate. No one knows any more than that.

Well, how modern is modern?
What about these three?
Enver Hoxha: (1908–1985): Communist ruler of Albania noted for implementing state atheism.
Aleksander Kwaśniewski (1954—): Former President of Poland (1995-2005).
Alexander Lukashenko (1954—): President of Belarus, self-described "Russian Orthodox atheist."

There are many
Kim Il Sung is responsible for the death 1.6 million in North Korea. (purges and concentration camps)
Fidel Castro killed thousands and he still alive and even Augusto Pinochet(he wasn't even a communist by the way) who recently died was the worst dictator in Chile history.
I don't have nothing against atheists honestly, but it hurts for a religious who works his best to make an impact for well being of mankind have to be considered in the same yardstick as the false religious who use religion for evil.Don't forget Gandhi was religious, both Muhammad Yunus(nobel peace prize winner) who helped millions get out of poverty and Shrin Ebadi who fought for religious freedom and women's rights in Iran something very hard(also a winner of nobel peace award) are devoted muslims,Mother Teresa was a devoted Christian and the list goes, but believe me there are many atheists I admire too specially humanists who work for a better world.I think we shouldn't criticise people over there beliefs but rather by there actions.

Stalin was pretty atheist.
I fear atheism not atheist.
Atheist have morals.(every sane person does) Its just that there moral views have been determined by themselves not a higher power.
Just because someone claims to be buddhist, christian, jewist, or islkamist does not necessarily mean they follow the teachings of those religions founders.
